King George and MAGAtutchi continue to assert that it is their fiscal responsibility that took the Torrance Financial Reserves from $600,000 in 2022 to almost $150,000,000 today.

In all actually it was Measure SST that saved our city. And, those two clowns opposed it! Councilmember Kalani made the motion to put it on the ballot!

Watch this council clip which proves it:

Then, share it with all of your Torrance family, friends and neighbors!

Four years ago Torrance voters said YES to Measure SST, which has raised almost $100,000,000. But, we are still short almost 40 police officers and one of our fire ladder trucks has only three firefighters on it.

Street and park repairs? When?

Meanwhile, King Chen, Carbetbagger Kaji and Old MAGAtutchi have given themselves huge pay and benefit raises; become frequent flyers to Asia and tout the increase in reserves as a major accomplishment!

They have approved more than 1,000 new housing units claiming Sacramento made them do it. Of course, none of the dark money from developers has anything to do with it!

Let’s bring back ethics and reality to our city! Only 18 days left to get it right!

Elect Sharon Kalani as our mayor

Elect David Kartsonis as District 1 councilman

Reelect Asam Sheikh as District 3 councilman

Elect Betty Lieu as District 5 councilwoman

Today’s Daily Breeze provides a recap of the Chamber of Commerce’s April 1st candidate forum for mayor of torrance, and I am shocked at Mayor Chen’s statements concerning the value of Measure SST to the city budget and reserves.

He either does not understand city finances or he purposely obfuscates the facts. Either is concerning.

He touts raising the city reserves from less than $600,000 to $150 million as his crowning glory. While the reserves did fall to $581,000 due to multiple financial anomalies over a decade, as of June 30, 2022, the city reserves - according to city financial reports - was more than $44 million.

SST was an initiative on the June 2022 ballot that added a half cent to Torrance’s sales tax. It passed with 55% of the vote. Since its inception SST reportedly has added $95 million to the city’s coffers.

Since SST passed I am not aware of any other source that provided a substantial increase in revenue.

Mayor Chen, who actively opposed Measure SST, and has yet to thank the voters who supported it, contends it only added $5 million per year to the city’s reserves - a total of $20 million. That is patently false.

Apparently he believes that since only $5 million of SST funds is earmarked for reserves, the remainder of SST funding becomes part of the general fund for he and council to spend as they see fit.

And, they sure have found some great ways to spend that extra money - including huge salary, benefit and travel expense increases for mayor and council.

Noteworthy Kalani has refused to accept the raise and apparently was left out of travel junkets with the mayor - leaving that to his buddies - Councilmembers Kaji and Mattucci.

In any event, while just $5 million of SST was earmarked for reserves, the remainder of the revenue raised paid for programs and obligations that would otherwise be paid from the general fund. And that freed up general fund revenue to add to the reserves. Basic bookkeeping.

So, Mayor Chen’s accomplishment of bringing the reserves to $150 million is actually a result of Torrance Voters approving SST - not his travel to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Sacramento or D.C.

On behalf of those of us who understood the need and supported SST, thank you to our community for agreeing with us.

Working together with other local communities works!

Our Westside neighborhoods are at a historic crossroads, and we have a unique opportunity to hear directly from the leaders shaping our future.

Meet the New West LA Mayors at the Wende Museum. This is a chance to engage with a powerhouse of local leadership and dive into the housing solutions our community needs. We are especially proud to support West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman and Culver City Mayor Freddy Puza, two historic LGBTQ+ voices leading our cities, alongside Santa Monica Mayor Caroline Torosis.

The evening will feature opening remarks from Culver City School Board Member Triston Ezidore and Dr. Ryan J. Smith, President & CEO of St. Joseph Center.

Together, they will share early priorities and explore how our neighboring cities are working together to drive real housing and safety solutions for everyone who calls the Westside home.
