The City of Torrington is considering purchasing bear-resistant Toters for residents who want to purchase one. Currently USA Hauling rents bear resistant carts to city residents for $144.00 per year. The city would offer residents the option to purchase the Toters for a one-time fee of $300.00, which would cover the cost of the Toter and freight/shipping charges.
Our plan is to order 210 units in the first order, if you are interested in buying one, please reach out in a timely manner. If response is greater than 210, additional units will be ordered as needed.
If you are interested in purchasing a bear-resistant Toter from the city, please email me at [email protected]. Once the order is placed estimated delivery is 4-6 weeks. The city will deliver the bear-resistant Toter and remove the regular city provided unit the Monday following receipt of payment.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION SPRING 2026
PUBLIC WORKS GARAGE 100 RAILROAD STREET FALLS VILLAGE

Spring cleaning? Remember to set aside any household hazardous waste that you may have for the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Collection Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 20 2026 at the Falls Village Public Works Garage 100 Railroad Street Falls Village CT.

All participants must REGISTER with their town or city hall to participate.

Participants should: 1) be ready to show your ticket upon entry, 2) stay in your vehicle at all times, and 3) place all waste material to be removed in the rear compartment of your vehicle, not in passenger areas. Workers will remove the waste from the back of your vehicle and be in full safety gear.

It is important to keep in mind that many of the products routinely used for housework, gardening, home improvement, or car maintenance contain hazardous materials that may endanger our health as well as pollute the environment. Household products are considered hazardous if they are toxic, flammable, reactive, or corrosive. Examples of such products include pesticides, herbicides, oil-based paints, degreasers, household cleaners, paint thinners, and gasoline.

Improper disposal of these hazardous household products, such as pouring them down the drain or putting them in the trash, is dangerous and may contribute to drinking water contamination and air pollution.

ALL RESIDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO REGISTER ONLINE.

LEAF & YARD WASTE
2026 SPRING PICKUP SCHEDULE
Leaf and Yard Waste pickup for Torrington residents will begin Monday, April 13th and end Friday April 24th 2026 weather permitting. Leaves and Yard Waste must be placed curbside for pickup on the same day as your garbage pickup. Please do not call to schedule pickup. Please do not use a bulk waste request for leaf and yard waste pick up. All Yard waste is collected in separate trucks for recycling, please do not mix or place yard waste in piles with your garbage.
Yard waste includes horticultural trimmings, which are free of stones, dirt, and sharp objects; or other natural organic matter, such as grass clippings, discarded from yards and gardens.
Only leaves and yard waste bagged in biodegradable paper bags (NO TAPE PLEASE) or tied into bundles not exceeding fifty (50) pounds in weight will be picked up. Individual branches shall not exceed four (4) feet in length or 3" in diameter. Leaves or yard waste raked into piles curbside will not be picked up.
Biodegradable Paper Bags can be purchased at many local stores.
Residents are reminded that leaves and grass trimmings are a recyclable material and cannot be picked up as part of our normal curbside collection and disposal program. Take advantage of our Spring & Fall clean-ups to properly dispose of these items. Grass clippings can be easily managed during the growing season by removing grass catchers on mowers and leaving the clippings on the lawn. Grass clippings are 80% water and decompose quickly. Clippings also act as a natural fertilizer returning nitrogen and other nutrients to the lawn.

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding roads in Torrington. Many of the main roads in Torrington are State Roads (see attached map) and are the responsibility of the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The City of Torrington maintains approximately 165 miles of roads for our citizens, but we do not maintain State roads. For questions about State Roads contact the CTDOT, for questions about city roads, contact the Street Department 860-489-2352.
