CT State Rep. Maria Horn Nominated to Run for Fifth Term by Unanimous Vote
I'm honored and delighted to accept the Democratic nomination to run for my fifth term representing the 64th District in the Connecticut General Assembly!

Thank you all for your support - especially to the delegates who participated in last night's nominating convention. Special thanks to Shelley Harms, my campaign treasurer, who ran a very efficient convention as its chair, and to Cindy Barrett, my volunteer coordinator, who made sure everything was in order as convention secretary. I'm also grateful to Salisbury First Selectman Curtis Rand and everyone at Salisbury Town Hall who hosted us.

Now our campaign begins in earnest. I pledge to give my all to the campaign and hope to see my Democratic colleagues elected to join me in Hartford to protect your rights, your health, our environment, our economy, and our democracy. There is certainly a lot to do between now and November!

If you couldn't make it to the convention, a video of my acceptance speech is at ElectMariaHorn.com. You can read the full text of my speech pasted below.

I know I can count on your help. I will be campaigning vigorously for the principles I cherish and the honor to continue to represent you in the General Assembly. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to join me, starting with Memorial Day events in Goshen this Sunday and Salisbury on Monday. If you'd like to volunteer, please email my amazing volunteer coordinator, Cindy Barrett at [email protected] or my terrific campaign manager, Melissa Cherniske at [email protected].

Warmly,

Maria Horn

As a Young Dem in the Summer of 1986, I can still clearly remember what it felt like to be in the middle of the Governor O'Neill vs. Toby Moffett challenge. At that time, as the article points out, the party infrastructure was very strong led by State Party Chairman John Droney and the Members of the Democratic State Central Committee including my mentor and predecessor Doris Sweetman, from Litchfield who represented us here in the 30th District for approximately 30 years from 1964 to 1994. I had begun my political involvement here in Torrington in 1980 as the first woman attorney elected to the Torrington Democratic Town Committee. The party labels of progressive vs. conservative vs. moderate were the be all and end all at that time, mainly as a result of those in their 50's and 60's throughout our state as members of the Democrat Party who were World War II and Korean War Veterans vs. those under 35 who had either recently served in Vietnam or were vigorously protesting against the War, as I was back in the day. This divide within the party continued up until around 9/11, after which the stark differences between Republicans and Democrats became more and more apparent and continues to this day. - Audrey

For people of a certain age in CT (we’re looking at you, Boomers) Toby Moffett needs no introduction.

Join the community in gathering for a peaceful, nonviolent protest on Sunday, January 11, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Coe Park in Torrington.

We are demanding the permanent removal of ICE from our communities, justice for Renee Good and every victim of ICE, and the immediate abolition of ICE. This action is part of nationwide rapid-response protests in solidarity with Minneapolis.

“ICE has invaded our cities, assaulted immigrant communities, and thrown our neighbors into concentration camps,” said Hunter Dunn, National Press Coordinator for 50501.

Participants are encouraged to bring signs and wear black or dark-colored clothing in memoriam of Renee Good and all victims of ICE violence. Join us in standing up for dignity, accountability, and justice on Sunday at Coe Park.

__________

Wednesday, January 7, an American citizen was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities.

A core principle behind all ICE Out For Good events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values, and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events. All events should be held in public spaces or on public property.

The Torrington Coe Park event is coordinated by IndivisibleNWCT
