EWC’s HIST 2460 Field Experience Day Four! ☀️🏜️

The group left Bloomfield, New Mexico at the crack of dawn to arrive at Chaco Canyon before the heat of the day set in. Seeing Fajada Butte from miles away let everyone know they were nearing this sacred and historic place.

Their first stop in the central Chacoan complex was Una Vida, where students hiked to the site and viewed the magnificent petroglyphs above the structure. From there, they explored Chetro Ketl and Pueblo Bonito, two incredibly impressive examples of Puebloan architecture.

Pueblo Bonito, built in a distinctive D shape, is roughly the size of the Roman Colosseum and carries important cultural and historical significance discussed throughout the course. Students were especially struck by the perfectly straight east and west facing wall at Chetro Ketl and by how different the architecture was from other Puebloan sites they had previously visited.

The group then traveled to Pecos National Monument, one of the important sites connected to the 1680 Pueblo Revolt. Students toured the church built by enslaved Native labor under Spanish rule and later burned during the revolt. They also viewed Glorieta Pass, where Coronado first arrived in the 1540s and a site later known for its Civil War history.

While visiting Pecos, students watched park workers making bricks using the same methods Native laborers would have used during the church’s construction centuries ago.

From the ceremonial architecture of Chaco Canyon to the later functional architecture at Pecos, it was a full day of learning, exploration, and history brought to life.

Day 3 of the HIST 2460 Field Experience class started at Mesa Verde. We hiked the petroglyph trail and it was awesome. It's a great hike and the petroglyph wall was very cool. We then went to Cliff Palace and got to see it from the rim and by walking through it. It was so impressive as a whole vision, and the intelligence of ancestral Puebloans to build cliff structures in the cool of the cliff sides where there are seep springs reinforced what we knew of their resourcefulness and planning.

We then drove into New Mexico to the Aztec National Monument, a Chacoan outlier, where we went in the reconstructed great kiva. Holy cow! It was huge compared to what we had imagined. Got us all excited to see the great kivas at Chaco.

Tonight we are a tired, but very happy group.

EWC’s HIST 2460 Field Experience class, led by History Professor Ellen Creagar, is on an unforgettable adventure through the Four Corners region!

The group left Torrington early on May 9 and traveled through beautiful snow capped mountain scenery before settling in for two nights in Cortez, Colorado. This year’s travelers include Kinley Bluemel, Angel Chavez, Amarie Huntsman, Ashlyn Jensen, Brooklyn Leithead, Carla Navarro, Adisyn Rollins, Sean Steemke, and Taisha Tanira.

Day 2 was packed with incredible experiences. The class began at Four Corners National Monument on Navajo Nation land, standing in the only place in the United States where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet. For many students, this was their first time visiting states beyond Colorado.

The group then explored Hovenweep, hiking through canyons and mesas to see ancient Puebloan structures. Hovenweep preserves six structures and was likely once home to around 2,500 people. Students enjoyed the peacefulness and remoteness of this remarkable place.

The afternoon brought a visit to Mesa Verde, where Balcony House exceeded every expectation. Walking through the cliff dwelling, crawling through tunnels, and climbing five ladders gave students a whole new appreciation for the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the people who once lived there. Seeing the approximately 38 rooms and 2 kivas up close was truly mind blowing.

To top off an incredible day, the group spotted a lone male black bear in a meadow while driving down from the mesa. Needless to say, everyone was excited!

Stay tuned for more!
