Please read this entire message for important information:
Real Estate tax, Personal Property tax, and Sewer Usage bills for January 2026 were mailed to taxpayers in July 2025. Supplemental Motor Vehicle bills are due in full in January 2026 and were sent out on December 31, 2025. To avoid penalties, all January 2026 installment payments must be made prior to February 2, 2026. For critical dates and details regarding this January 2026 collection period, please refer to our legal notices at https://www.torringtonct.gov/216/Tax-Collectors-Office.
For the January 2026 installment, bills are technically due on Thursday, January 1, 2026. However, the law allows taxpayers to pay without penalties until Monday, February 2, 2026. A due date must be established to calculate penalties for taxpayers who do not pay on time. To avoid these penalties, payments must be physically received in the tax collector’s office by February 2, 2026. We also accept payments in our drop box at City Hall until 4 PM on Monday, February 2, 2026. Alternatively, payments can be made using our online payment system, MuniciPAY, prior to midnight on February 2, 2026. If paying by mail, ensure that the envelope has a US postmark by February 2, 2026. Please note that we cannot accept meter marks as a postmarked date; instead, we will use the date received in our office to determine how the payment is applied. If bills are not paid on time, interest will accrue at 1.5% per month from the due date of January 1, 2026. Additionally, a $5 fee will be applied to all delinquent supplemental motor vehicle taxes immediately after February 2, 2026, when they are reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles. For more information on how to pay through your online banking, please visit our website https://www.torringtonct.gov/416/Payment-Options.
The easiest, most convenient, and most economical way to pay your taxes is through an E-Check (Electronic Check/ACH payment). Visit our website https://www.torringtonct.gov/, and on the home page or the tax collector’s page, click on the link entitled "Online Payments" for additional details. For a fee of just $0.95, you can avoid the anxiety and delay of mailing your payment. Payments can also be made online using a credit or debit card for a fee of 2.65%. Please note that these fees are also charged if you choose to pay with a debit or credit card in the office; we do not process any E-Check payments in the office.
If you wish to appeal your supplemental motor vehicle tax bill, we recommend paying your bill by the delinquent date of February 2, 2026. After that, if you wish to appeal your assessment, please contact the Board of Assessment Appeals. More details can be found on their website https://www.torringtonct.gov/174/Board-of-Assessment-Appeals.
Please note that ALL sewer usage bills are mailed to taxpayers. If your sewer usage bill is escrowed, please forward it to your mortgage company immediately. If you are unsure, contact them for clarification. Otherwise, it is payable as stated on the bill.
