Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth is an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history, celebrate freedom, and recognize the resilience, achievements, and contributions of African Americans throughout our communities and country.
The City of Torrington is proud to recognize this year’s Juneteenth Mayor, Anya Ketzia Stephenson. A first-generation Caribbean American and proud Torrington native, Anya has distinguished herself through her accomplishments in education, the arts, entrepreneurship, and community service. From her early years in Torrington Public Schools to earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Hartford and founding successful creative ventures, Anya has remained committed to uplifting others and giving back to the community she calls home.
Through her work as a photographer, designer, entrepreneur, and mentor, Anya has collaborated with numerous local organizations and businesses while creating opportunities for fellow artists and creatives throughout our region. Her dedication, leadership, and community spirit make her an outstanding representative of Torrington and this year’s deserving honoree.
Please join us today at City Hall at 11:00 a.m. for a Juneteenth celebration and flag-raising ceremony as we honor Anya and recognize the significance of this important day.
