For Immediate Release

Structure Fire - 900 Blk East Main

Responding Units- TFD- Eng 8, Tender 7, Rescue 4, Engine 6, Chief 1
Stark County Ambulance, Toulon PD, Stark County Sheriff, Ameren IL
Mutual aid- Galva Fire - Engine and Tender, Bishop Hill - Engine and Tender, Wyoming- 2 Engines and Tender, Lafayette- Engine and Tender

At approximately 1620 on March 26th, the Toulon Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire (barn). Whilst enroute, mutual aid was requested from the above departments. Wind speeds at the time of call were out of the North at approximately 30-40 with gusts up to 50 mph and played a significant role in the intensity and spread of fire.

On arrival of Engine 8, a large 40x 40 2 story barn was found with heavy fire through the roof. An exposure was immediately to the west of the structure. A 2.5 inch hoseline was pulled to protect exposures. A water supply using tenders was established. Due to high winds, several exposures were damaged and several spot fires around the scene were extinguished. Several goats were removed by members from an exposure that caught fire and are safe. During this incident we also responded to and extinguished a separate field fire.

No people or animals were injured. The two structures involved are a total loss along with several vehicles.

Last Friday’s brush fire was a 5-alarm fire where 11 different fire departments were on scene for about 7 hours. When there’s that many departments on scene for that long, the tenders need fuel and the brush trucks need gas to keep moving and finish the task at hand. It is up to the incident commander to make sure that the people on scene have the proper resources they need. Normally, it is up to the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) to pay for any cost affiliated with the resources needed.

On Friday, Chief Miller had the Bureau County EMA take initiative to find fuel and gas resources for all apparatus on scene. Ag View FS answered that call and didn’t miss a beat to provide diesel fuel and gas. Instead of sending a bill, they sent this letter donating every gallon that was used that afternoon.

We greatly appreciate the relationship and teamwork that Ag View has given not only us, but all departments that were on scene that day. Thank you very much for your kindness, teamwork, and dedication to make sure everyone had fuel!

🔥The Toulon Fire Department has implemented a BURN BAN, effective Friday February 27, 2026 at 6:00 AM and lasting until 11:59 PM on Friday February 27, 2026. This action is authorized by the District Fire Chief and the District Trustees.🔥

This BURN BAN prohibits all residents of the Toulon Fire Protection District from engaging in any open burning. This includes the burning of landscape waste, agricultural waste, household trash, and garbage. The ban also applies to all types of consumer fireworks.

By law, fire departments have the authority to impose fines for violations of this burn ban.

The Fire Chief has the authority to issue this burn ban in accordance with Illinois State Law (70 ILCS 705/8.20), which directs everyone to refrain from any open burning, including landscape waste, agricultural waste, household trash, and garbage. Additionally, any type of consumer fireworks is also prohibited under this ban. Fire departments are required to enforce compliance and will impose fines for any violations after issuing warnings and extinguishing unauthorized fires.

*** As with all Volunteer Fire Departments, we have standing Mutual Aid Agreements with our neighboring departments, and Wyoming Fire Department is also implementing the same burn ban. Please share!
