It is often believed that s*xy or suggestive clothing invites wanted male attention, positive or negative. Regardless, wearing revealing clothing does not invite s*xual assault. In fact, women and girls have been r***d in everything from jeans to business suits to pajamas. This belief reinforces the myth that women and girls invite assault by their clothing choices and shifts the blame for the crime to the victim and away from the perpetrator, where it belongs.

Denim Day 2026:

In 1999 the Italian High Court overturned a r**e conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault. The justices stated that the victim must have helped her attacker removed her jeans, from which they inferred consent. People all around the world were outraged. Wearing jeans on this anniversary became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about s*xual violence.

Wear jeans with a purpose.

Why is it called Denim Day?

The History of Denim Day from Denimday.org:

"The Denim Day story began in Italy 1992, when an 18-year old girl was r***d by the 45-year old driving instructor who was taking her to her very first driving lesson. He took her to an isolated road, pulled her out of the car, removed her jeans and forcefully r***d her.

She reported the r**e and the perpetrator was arrested and prosecuted. He was then convicted of r**e and sentenced to jail. Years later, he appealed the conviction claiming that the s*x was consensual, leading the Italian Supreme Court to overturn the conviction and release the perpetrator. A statement from the Court argued that because the victim was wearing very tight jeans, she had to help remove them, and by removing the jeans it was not r**e but consensual s*x. This became known throughout Italy as the “jeans alibi.”

Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched a protest wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. This protest was picked up by international media which inspired the California Senate and Assembly to do the same on the steps of the Capitol in Sacramento. Patti Occhiuzzo Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, saw this in the media and thought everyone should be wearing jeans to protest all of the myths about why women and girls are r***d. Thus, Denim Day in LA was born. The first Denim Day in LA event was held in April 1999, and has continued annually since."

On April 29th, wear jeans to support victims and protest the misconception about s*xual violence!
