Laminated pages from a children's book are attached to wooden stakes, which are installed along the Merrill Parkway’s pedestrian trail in Towanda, PA. The signs will begin at the southern end of the trail, near the Progress building, and will be spaced over a half mile. This year’s book will be, “Daniel Finds a Poem” by Micha Archer. “Daniel Finds a Poem” is about a little boy named Daniel who wan
ts to write a poem but first he needs to learn what poetry is. On his road to discovery he asks the animals in the park what poetry means to them. When all of their answers are joined together, they reveal a poem.
“Daniel Finds a Poem” is Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child 2017 selection. One Book, Every Young Child is a valuable program that highlights the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers and the significance of reading early and often to children, as well as engaging them in conversation and other activities around books. One Book, Every Young Child is made possible through a collaboration of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, The Carnegie Science Center, Pennsylvania Library Association, Pennsylvania Center for the Book, Pennsylvania’s Promise for Children, Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children and The Pennsylvania Child Care Association. This project is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. The StoryWalk is hosted by Towanda Public Library, Monroeton Public Library, and the Bradford County Library. The libraries are very hopeful to bring more storywalks in the future.
