There’s something about horseback riding in Cades Cove that turns an ordinary day in the Smokies into a story you’ll tell for years.

It starts right here at the stable horses being matched with their riders, families waiting together, guides getting everyone ready, and that mix of excitement and anticipation before heading out on the trail.

Then it’s time to saddle up.

Under the shade of the trees, across the mountain landscape, and along trails surrounded by the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains, life seems to move a little slower from the back of a horse.

And when the ride is over? You may leave the saddle behind, but you take the memories home with you.

Bring the family. Bring someone who's never ridden before. Bring someone who loves horses as much as you do. Just come ready to make a Smoky Mountain memory.

Who would you want riding beside you?

There’s a special kind of excitement around the barn when the horses are saddled, riders are getting matched with their horses, and another group is preparing to head out on the trail.

For some guests, it’s their very first time on horseback. For others, riding is something they’ve loved for years. Either way, once everyone is mounted and ready, the noise of everyday life starts to disappear and the Smoky Mountains take over.

Soon, this group will leave the barn behind and head beneath the trees to experience Cades Cove the way it was meant to be experienced slowly, peacefully, and from the back of a horse.

These are the moments we love seeing: families together, new riders overcoming their nerves, experienced riders back in the saddle, and memories being made before the trail ride has even begun.

If you could saddle up and ride through Cades Cove today, who would you bring with you?

When most people think about Cades Cove Riding Stables, horseback riding is the first thing that comes to mind. But there’s another way to slow things down and enjoy the beauty of the Smokies a horse-drawn carriage ride.

There’s something special about climbing aboard, hearing the horses start walking and leaving the rush of everyday life behind for a little while.

No saddle required. Just sit back, enjoy the ride and spend some time together surrounded by the scenery of Cades Cove and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Our carriage rides are a great option for families, couples and anyone looking for a different kind of Smoky Mountain experience. And, of course, the horses are still the stars of the show.

Sometimes the best memories aren't complicated. They're a beautiful day, good company, a pair of horses out front and a carriage rolling along behind them.

You can drive through Cades Cove. You can stop at the overlooks, explore the historic buildings, watch for wildlife and take hundreds of pictures.

But experiencing this place from the back of a horse is something entirely different.

These photos show a little bit of what a day at Cades Cove Riding Stables is all about horses waiting at the mounting area, riders getting ready for their adventure, families making memories together, and those big smiles when everyone comes back from the trail.

One of our favorite things is seeing how many different people come through the stables. Some have been riding horses their entire lives. Others are climbing into a saddle for the very first time. We get couples, families, grandparents, kids and people who simply decided that their Smoky Mountain vacation needed one more adventure.

Then the horses start walking, the group heads toward the woods, and the stable slowly disappears behind them.

For a while, it's just you, your horse and the Great Smoky Mountains.

And sometimes the best part comes afterward when everyone gets back and starts talking about the horse they rode, something they saw along the trail, or the part of the ride they'll remember most.

Those are the moments we love seeing.

If a trip to Cades Cove is in your future, don't just see it from the road. Come experience a little piece of the Smokies from the saddle.

Have you ever been horseback riding in the Great Smoky Mountains? If you have, tell us where you rode and if you rode with us, tell us which horse you remember!

Some of the best vacation memories don’t come from rushing from one attraction to the next. Sometimes they happen when you climb into a saddle, meet your horse, and spend a little time enjoying the mountains at a completely different pace.

These photos capture exactly what we love about horseback riding at Cades Cove Riding Stables.

You can see the smiles before and after the ride, families sharing the experience together, horses lined up and ready to go, and our guides making their way around the stables getting everyone prepared for another trip down the trail.

For some people, this may be their first time ever sitting on a horse. For others, horseback riding is something they’ve loved their entire lives. Either way, there’s something pretty special about experiencing the Great Smoky Mountains from the saddle.

Once you leave the stable area and head toward the woods, things start to feel different. The sounds change. The pace slows down. Instead of watching the Smokies through a windshield, you're riding through the forest with nothing but the trail ahead of you and the sound of horses walking beneath the trees.

And judging by those smiles, we'd say these riders had a pretty good day.

Trips to Cades Cove eventually become stories people tell for years. Maybe it's the bear you spotted along Loop Road, the old cabin you stopped to explore, the incredible mountain view you photographed — or maybe it's the horse you rode and still remember by name years later.

That's why we love being part of people's visits to Cades Cove.

If you've ridden horses at Cades Cove before, do you still remember the name of the horse you rode?

Tell us the horse's name in the comments. We have a feeling some of our horses are going to get a lot of shout-outs.
