With the extreme cold combined with the snow forecast for this weekend, please take a few minutes to make sure you and your family are prepared. Remember to keep an eye on how long your pets are outside and if your pipes are prone to freezing, let the faucets drip. While Massachusetts is located in a moderate earthquake zone, larger earthquakes are possible, so it's important to know some simple safety rules if the ground begins to shake.

During an earthquake, drop to the ground, cover your head and neck with your arms and, if possible, hold on under a sturdy piece of furniture until the shaking stops.

This morning Deputy Director Jeff Cormier attended the quarterly Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) Emergency Mangement Director meeting. Topics discussed included tips on the use of social media to spread awareness of information, a presentation by Fall River Fire Department Chief of Special Services regarding the tragic fire at the Gabriel House assisted living facility, an update on various Emergency Management topics from MEMA including upcoming grant opportunities, and a review of various educational programs offered by MEMA to members of the Emergency Management community within Massachusetts.

Attending these meetings allow us to ensure we are prepared for any emergencies Townsend may face and ensures we know what resources are available to us if we may need them.

More preparedness information for preparedness month!

Get Alerted: Make sure your phone settings allow you to receive emergency alert messages. Also follow your local emergency services on their various social media platforms. Here locally, this should include Townsend Emergency Management, Townsend Fire-EMS, Townsend Police, and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

Supplies in your car: You never know when a disaster or emergency will occur, or where you will be when it happens. Consider buying basic supplies for your car such as a battery bank/charger, a blanket, first aid kit, tools, food etc.

Protect your property: Research your insurance policies, make sure you know what is covered and what is not. Also see if you are covered for flooding and other weather related events.

Post #2 of our Preparedness Month Reminders:

Planning on a budget: Preparing for a disaster does not have to be expensive. In an emergency it is more important to have the item you need than to worry about the quality of the item or where you bought it. Consider purchasing items at discount stores.

Documents: In the heat of the moment when a disaster strikes it may be difficult to remember what you need to grab if you are leaving your home and many times people forget that they may need documents. Consider making copies or storing documents in a convenient place and where they can be protected (Small safe for example). In a disaster setting one of the most important things to remember is insurance documents in the event you have to work with the insurance company before returning home.

Teach the Kids: It is important to remember that kids could be away from home in a disaster situation or could be home alone. Make sure they know important contact information and what to do if they are unable to make contact with anyone.

September has been declared "Preparedness Month" in Massachusetts.

Throughout the month we will be sharing various tips and reminders of ways to stay prepared and stay safe in the event of an emergency. This could include an isolated incident such as a fire in your home, or a wide spread incident such as another ice storm (Lets hope we don't see that again), blizzards, wind damage, flooding, etc...

Today's Reminders are:

Prepare yourself for an emergency: Consider what you would need to do to prepare for a day or a week without power, cell service, or internet service. Consider alternate methods to keep in touch with family.

Check your Supplies: Check that your flashlights are working, you have spare batteries, and ensure any other supplies you have are not expired and are ready to go in the event you need them. This should include non-perishable food, water, and first aid supplies. Also consider having a stock of extra medication for yourself and/or family members.

Plan for Pets: Make sure you are prepared for your pet's needs during an emergency as well. Consider stocking additional food, water, medications, and first aid supplies for whatever types of pets you may have. Also consider where you might bring them in the event you had to leave your home and how you would transport them.

Stay tuned throughout September for additional information!
