Glen Arboretum

Glen Arboretum The Glen functions as a research site for the students, classes, and faculty of Towson University. Find out more at our website: www.towson.edu/glen

The Glen Arboretum occupies approximately12 acres of wooded area within the boundaries of Towson University. The Glen was dedicated in 1936 to provide an educational experience for the college and for students in the Baltimore region. The Glen continues as a site of ongoing research for students, classes and faculty, and now includes a Challenge Course operated by Campus Recreation Services. The m

ission of the Glen is:
1) To establish and maintain specimens of plants, principally trees and shrubs, that are native to Maryland.
2) To provide an educational experience for the University community and community at large that is both scientifically accurate yet accessible to lay persons.
3) To serve as an outreach and community engagement tool of the University. Ongoing faculty and student restoration work is being conducted in the Glen to improve and continue its educational history. Please join us in restoring and maintaining the Glen by attending the invasive species removal, cleanup, or tree planting events held year round! For more information on specific event dates and times please contact the admin or keep an eye out for announcements in the T3. Check out our new website for more information: www.towson.edu/glen

Just how invasive do some of these invasive plants get? In the left hand image you can see Japanese Ivy that was wrapped so tightly around a tree that the tree absorbed the invader! Both the tree and the invader are still alive (surprisingly). The image on the left is also tightly wrapped ivy that's starting to cut this small tree.

Orchids blooming in the Towson Greenhouse. In a few days this will look amazing. Lisa has done an amazing job of bringing these plants back to life from their near dessicated stage a year ago.

Grey, mild days are a good time to catch the white tailed deer that frequent the arborerum in winter. There are two in the picture below. You can also watch for their prints along the trails. Look for the two "toed" hoof prints.

Today the invasive species team along with 21 Volunteers planted 51 native trees and shrubs in the Glen Woods. That is (I think) a record for the number of things we've planted in a single day! Special thanks to Dr. Sarah Haines and Dr. Faith Weeks who both offered extra credit to student volunteers. A super-big thank you to Hammertime, the Towson Women's Ultimate Frisbee club, who you can find here: https://www.facebook.com/Towson-Hammertime-Ultimate-Frisbee-Team-123478033225/ We couldn't have done it without you ladies! You rock!

STOP...Hammertime!
