The state department of conservation began restoring land and pines in the Savage Gulf State Natural Area in Beersheba Springs, just over two hours southeast of Nashville. The goal was to protect the federally threatened white fringeless orchid, a two-foot tall plant featuring a cluster of white petals resembling small figures with arms outstreached.
With state and federal funding, conservation crews began land restoration on about 1,200 acres.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency announced a plan to reintroduce the red-cockaded woodpecker to the state.
