From the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce website. All nine of the COCs in the area as well as the League of Women Voters, backed adoption of the Code of Civility:

“Elected officials around San Luis Obispo County reached across political, ideological and geographic divides in pledging to uphold civil behavior in their civic affairs.

In a jovial gathering of government, community and business leaders June 21 (2018), the mayors of all seven cities and the chair of the county Board of Supervisors signed a regional Code of Civility they described as a pivotal step in launching a new era of regional collaboration.

“We are a diverse group with very different ideas about how to solve our challenges,” Board of Supervisors Chair John Peshong said. “We knew we needed to find ways to work together in a manner that allows the best ideas to surface for better decisions for our region.”

Nine Chambers of Commerce around the county backed the creation of the code, as did the local League of Women Voters, a leading voice on civil discourse for many years.

After adopting the pledge, the group encouraged people to hold them accountable and also to consider applying the code in their own organizations, boards and other bodies.”

‘Our hope is that it will be embraced and valued by our community as the standard of leadership in our councils and board chambers and in our communities,’ San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon said. ‘Our community deserves that, and we need it if we are going to get to work solving our many challenges and making our communities the best we know that they can be.’”

TRACY CODE OF CIVILITY - In our deliberations we pledge to:

- Listen First
We will make an honest effort to understand views and reasoning of others by listening to understand, not
listening to find fault, allowing thoughtful discussion to lead to the best possible outcomes.

- Respect Different Opinions
We will invite and consider different perspectives, allowing space for ideas to be expressed, opposed and
clarified in a constructive manner.

- Be Courteous
We will treat all colleagues, staff and members of the public in a professional and courteous manner
whether in person, online, or in written communication, especially when we disagree.

- Disagree Constructively
We strive to advance solutions to community issues; when faced with disagreement, we do more than
simply share our concerns with differing positions, we work to propose a course of action of mutual benefit.

- Debate the Policy Not the Person
We will focus on the issues, and not personalize debate or use other tactics that divert attention from the
issue.

- Tell The Truth
We do not tolerate deliberate falsehoods and will call these out immediately. When faced with misinformation we correct it. If we were the source, we apologize for our error and pass along the corrected content.
