Defiance, especially in little ones, is often dysregulation!

It's so important as parents to remain calm and sturdy to co-regulate with our kids still learning the skills of managing their big emotions.

What looks like defiance is often dysregulation. When we teach kids how to notice internal cues, behavior improves from the inside out.

Let’s stop labeling and start listening.

Parenting is a beautiful contradiction where we often feel two things at once.

These challenging moments pull us in every direction…

And without an understanding of what an "AND" moment is, we are at risk of feeling not enough.

Here is a poster to remind you to connect thoughts that sometimes feel like contradictions with an "AND" instead. 🙂

Punishment vs Partnership, looks the same but feels totally different!

Punishment vs Partnership, looks the same but feels totally different!

While punishment can sometimes help us meet our needs in the short term, it tends to create way more resistance + conflict in the long term, and here’s why: it interrupts our connection with kids.

This doesn’t mean that kids should never experience the consequences of their actions…that is a natural part of life and an essential part of living together.

It’s all about our intentions and mindset. Are we coming at it from a place of punishment, with the goal of making them feel sorry for what they did? Or are we coming at it with the goal of helping them learn better, more helpful ways of meeting their needs?
