Save the date! On October 2 and 3, join us for a FREE symposium, “Experiencing Independence: Eyewitness Accounts of the American Revolution.”

Firsthand accounts of the American Revolution provide historians, museums, and historic sites with critical details for understanding what it was like to experience independence. To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Historic Trappe, the McNeil Center for Early American Studies, and Ursinus College are partnering to convene a symposium, “Experiencing Independence: Eyewitness Accounts of the American Revolution.”

This free symposium will explore the diaries, journals, letters, and material culture made or used by people in the mid-Atlantic region from 1760–1790. Panels will explore family dynamics in the midst of political upheaval, wartime experiences of soldiers and civilians, accounts from different religious perspectives, and new approaches to non-English sources on the American Revolution.

Going into the fall and winter, Historic Trappe will remain open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sundays from 12 to 4 pm. On Fridays, starting September 11, visitors must first go to the Dewees Tavern to purchase admission, including guided tours of the Muhlenberg House and Speaker’s House. On Saturdays and Sundays, admission may be purchased at all three sites.

If weekends don’t work for you, we are also available for private group tours by appointment. Visit historictrappe.org/group-tours for more information.

Our fall lecture series begins on Tuesday, September 15, at 7 pm, with “Moravians in the American Revolution,” by Scott Paul Gordon!

The American Revolution put Pennsylvania’s Moravians in a tough place. They wanted to remain neutral, but Patriots demanded that they choose a side and threatened to seize all their property if they didn’t. When military forces—troops on the move, prisoners, and injured soldiers—occupied Bethlehem (“engulfed” the small community, Bethlehem's leader John Ettwein said), Moravians had no choice but to transform the way they lived. Their communities did survive these dangerous times. But, as this talk will explore, the Revolution permanently transformed Bethlehem.

Thanks to a grant from the Schuylkill Highlands Partnership, our new wayfinding and interpretive signs are officially installed and turned out even better than we had imagined! The Speaker's House, Muhlenberg House, Dewees Tavern, and St. Luke's Cemetery now have their own interpretive signs featuring a brief history of each property and images of historical figures or artifacts associated with it. Wayfinding signs for a "History Trail" are now located along the Perkiomen Trail in Collegeville as well as along Trappe's Main Street to encourage bicyclists and pedestrians to visit our historic sites. We also installed bicycle racks at the Dewees Tavern and Muhlenberg House. Be sure to stop by to see all the new signage for yourself!

Special thanks are also due to Paul Trapido for designing these beautiful signs, The Homer Group in Lower Providence Township for producing them, and to Jason and Joe from JGA Home Services Inc. for helping install them.

Tour Guide Favorites: Güldenes Schatz Kästlein der Kinder Gottes

Tour manager Janine explains the importance of this “Golden Treasure Chest for the Children of God,” a collection of religious verses that Henry Muhlenberg and his family found solace in during the Revolutionary War and other times of crisis.

This artifact and many others are on display in our exhibit “Window to Revolution: Pennsylvania Germans and the War for Independence,” which is located in the Dewees Tavern. Visit us every weekend to tour our exhibit galleries as well as our historic houses.
