Don’t forget to TURN YOUR BALLOT OVER! 🗳️

Judge Warren will appear on the back side of the ballot and far too many voters never make it that far. Turning your ballot over could make the difference.

Judge Warren is also the author of two books, including his newest, The Revolutionary Words That Forged America: The Definitive Guide to the Declaration of Independence (2026), a word by word examination of the document that helped shape our nation.

A back-to-school message from Speaker of the House Matt Hall

Kids across Grand Traverse County head back to class in a matter of days. Michigan's Speaker of the House, Matt Hall, wrote to share what this year's education budget means for them — and it's worth a read.

His priorities are ones parents on every block can get behind:

Reading comes first. $222.5 million for literacy and for training teachers in a proven phonics program, plus $50 million for tutoring so students who are behind get individual help before third grade slips away from them.

A record investment in the classroom. Base per-pupil funding is up $250, to $10,300 per student — money that keeps good teachers where they belong and puts books and desks in front of kids.

Fed, safe, supported. The Hall Universal Breakfast and Lunch in Schools (HUBS) plan protects free breakfast and lunch for Michigan students, worth as much as $1,000 a year to some families. Funding for school safety and student mental health has been restored and protected after being cut in previous years.

Phones out of the classroom. Schools will keep students off their phones during instruction, while districts still set their own rules for lunch and passing periods. Teachers get to teach. Students get to learn.

Mike LaFaive is coming to the Action Center.

For thirty years, Michael LaFaive has done one thing better than almost anyone in Michigan: follow the tax dollars. Corporate subsidy deals. State budgets. Economic development programs that promise jobs and deliver press releases. He digs into where the money actually goes — and then he tells people plainly what he found.

He's the Senior Director of the Morey Fiscal Policy Initiative at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. His research helped bring an end to Michigan's MEGA tax credit program, he once wrote a budget analysis identifying roughly $2 billion in possible savings, and reporters have called him for comment more than 1,300 times in the past decade.

Now he's coming to Grand Traverse County to talk about Michigan's fiscal picture — and to take your questions.

The Odyssey is more than adventure. It is one of the foundational stories of the Western tradition — duty, perseverance, the defense of home, and the difference between ordered liberty and chaos. Those same stories helped form the soil in which Greek experiments in self-government took root. The American Founders read the classics closely. They understood that free institutions require citizens and leaders formed by something deeper than the politics of the moment.

C.S. Lewis made a similar point in a different key. In The Screwtape Letters, the senior devil's advice is essentially that the surest way to keep a person from serious thought is to keep him occupied with the immediate and the trivial. Great literature does the opposite. It trains the imagination toward permanent things: character, responsibility, and the long view.

Which brings us to tomorrow. Whatever your ballot looks like, one question is always worth asking anyone seeking your vote: Where do you draw your inspiration?

Stories like The Odyssey still matter because they remind us that politics is never only about the next election cycle. It is also about the kind of people we are becoming.

The Grand Traverse County Republican Party will host Judge Warren at the Action Center this month on Tuesday, August 27th at 5PM for an evening on the Michigan Supreme Court — what the court does, how its decisions reach into daily life in Michigan, and why the race matters in November.

Judge Warren has served on the Oakland County Circuit Court since 2002. He teaches constitutional law, has written on the American founding, and co-founded Patriot Week. Come with questions.

There's still time to run for precinct delegate.

The primary is Tuesday, August 4. If you missed the filing deadline, precinct delegate is the one office on the ballot that gets a second chance — you can still run as a write-in.

Two ways to file:
→ Declaration of Intent with the County Clerk by Friday, July 31 at 4:00 p.m.
→ Or with your precinct board on Election Day, before polls close at 8:00 p.m.

One thing worth knowing: write-in votes for precinct delegate are only counted if that form is on file. No form, no votes — no matter how many people write your name in.

You need to be a registered voter in the precinct you'd represent, and the form requires notarization. Local banks and the Clerk's office can handle that.

Precinct delegates choose this party's leadership at the fall convention. It's the most direct say a grassroots Republican has in how we operate.

Changed your mind before the August 4 primary — or did a candidate you voted for drop out? In Michigan, you can "spoil" your absentee ballot and vote a new one. Here's how, straight from the Secretary of State:

Already returned your ballot? Send a signed, written request to your city or township clerk (not the county). It must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, July 24.

Still have your ballot? Request a new one by mail (clerk must receive your request by 5 p.m. Friday, July 31), spoil it in person at your clerk's office through 4 p.m. Monday, August 3, or take it to your early voting site or Election Day precinct.

One catch: once your ballot has been tabulated, it can't be changed.

Find your clerk and track your ballot at Michigan.gov/Vote.

The Grand Traverse County Republican Party is seeking volunteers for two temporary openings, now through December 2026:

• Executive Committee Secretary — prepare monthly meeting minutes in MS Word; GTGOP membership, or willingness to join.
• Finance Committee Members — help steward the party's budget; basic financial knowledge welcome.

Open to loyal Republicans registered to vote in Grand Traverse County. No political résumé required — just a willingness to serve as we head into a pivotal 2026.
