GTA staff began the day on Monday with introductions and a motivating kickoff presentation by Superintendent Michelle Floering. After the first segment of the day's training, they were treated to a delicious cookout for lunch, provided and served by the leadership team and prepared by members of the board of directors. What a great way to start off the school year in preparation for the return of our students next week!

Just a reminder that orientation for incoming 7th graders (5:00 pm) and 9th graders (6:00 pm) is planned for Wednesday, August 26. Students and parents are asked to meet in the Big Gym at their assigned time for important information about the transition to junior high or high school, a chance to connect with friends, pick up class schedules and try out locker combinations so they are ready for the first day of school. We'll see you then!

As you may know, East Bay Township's Safe Routes to School Pedestrian Trail Project will be constructed at Hammond and Three Mile Roads in conjunction with Grand Traverse County's reconstruction of Hammond Road. Work will begin on the intersection on Monday, August 10 and is expected to conclude on August 17. Because the intersection will be closed, access to Grand Traverse Academy will be affected during this time. Please refer to the township web page link below for a detailed description of the project, maps of temporary detours and updates as they become available. You and your young drivers will want to give yourselves extra time if you need to come to school during the construction period.

A group of our volleyball athletes had a fantastic time attending an independent volleyball camp last week. It was a great opportunity for them to build skills, grow as teammates and enjoy the game they love. They are excited to bring back all they learned to their upcoming season!

GTA held a fun and successful Summer Basketball Camp, with 85 elementary through high school students participating. Current high school players assisted as coaches' helpers for elementary and junior high campers, and there was an impressive group of special camp speakers, including Daron Klooster (current GTA varsity boys' coach), Matt Gorman (former TC Central varsity girls' coach), Major Bevis (current TC Christian varsity girls' coach), Ethan Pike (former goalie for Cornerstone University and current goalie coach for Elk Rapids varsity soccer teams) and Brad Richards (former Calvary Christian Schools varsity boys'/girls' coach and 2002 D3 Coach of the Year for the state of Michigan). A big thanks to the camp speakers, as well as GTA varsity girls' coach Kelsey Pike and varsity girls' assistant coach David Haberlein for coaching, and Kelsey Pike for organizing and running the camp.
