Groundwork Center

Groundwork Center Economy. Environment. Community. Groundwork is optimistic about Michigan’s future.

Our unparalleled natural resources and our deeply rooted agricultural heritage are assets to be enjoyed and protected. We envision a state with a strong and diversified economy that offers opportunities for people from all walks of life: new jobs throughout the state in clean energy and agriculture; towns and cities that are vibrant, exciting centers of community, arts, culture, and commerce; and

more options to get around with a diverse transportation infrastructure that makes it easy to choose walking, biking, public transit, or access to a well-maintained road network. People will move to Michigan, or return home, to enjoy all the state has to offer and to raise the next generations of bright, industrious, and proud Michiganders. Groundwork is committed to realizing this vision through strategically selected campaigns, initiatives, and projects. We focus our work in northwest Michigan because the region’s entrepreneurial spirit, culture of collaboration, and successful track record of joining economic growth and environmental protection make it a proving ground for innovation and possibility. We believe northwest Michigan will play an essential role in leading the state to prosperity.

Happy Juneteenth! Today we celebrate the freedom and resilience of Black Americans. Did you know that red foods, like these tomatoes harvested from a community garden, are commonly eaten during Juneteenth celebrations?

Check out Traverse City's Juneteenth celebrations and learn more about Juneteenth from Groundwork Advisory Council Member Marshall Collins on the Groundwork website: https://groundworkcenter.org/juneteenth-independence-day-for-all-people/

Luxury in travel isn't always about opulence, it's about comfort, ease, and enjoying the journey. Unlike driving or flying, train travel lets you relax, read, work, nap, or simply take in the scenery. Most of us may never experience the world's most extravagant rail journeys, like the ones featured in this NYT article, but incorporating rail into your next trip might reveal a different kind of luxury: the freedom to slow down and enjoy the ride.

From Angola to Turkmenistan, sumptuously outfitted railroad cars are taking passengers on over-the-top journeys back in time.

Our dietitian on staff, Paula Martin, has been an advocate and participating in a learning network for almost a decade. We are thrilled that the momentum is growing and are proud of our partners who were able to contribute to this event!

If you’ve been thinking about supporting Groundwork, this is a really meaningful moment to do so.

Right now, a generous donor is matching all new and increased gifts—up to $10,000.

That means your support goes twice as far in helping us:
– strengthen local food systems
– expand clean energy
– and build better ways to connect our communities

This work doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built step by step, with people who care deeply about this place.

People like you.

If you’re able to give, we’d be so grateful to have you with us in this: https://groundworkcenter.org/donate-today/

What does clean energy look like at the local level?

At Groundwork, we’re working with rural electric co-ops across northern Michigan to help expand access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy.

Because co-ops are member-owned, real change can happen from the ground-up—driven by the people they serve.

This is about more than energy. It’s about building stronger, more resilient communities.

Want to see more clean energy in your community?
