Treasure Island Fire Rescue Treasure Island Fire Rescue is an “All Hazards” emergency response organization. We are an “All Hazards” emergency response organization.

Treasure Island Fire Rescue has responded to fires, emergency medical incidents, hazardous materials spills, and other emergencies since 1949. Our department is also responsible for Emergency Management during man-made and natural disasters. Treasure Island Fire Rescue is staffed by full-time firefighter/paramedics twenty-four hours a day using a rotating three-shift system. Treasure Island Fire R

escue is equipped with one Class A 2000 gpm pumper, one Class A 1500 gpm pumper/squad, a 4-wheel drive quick response rescue vehicle, a 4-wheel drive utility vehicle, a fire chief’s vehicle, a Sea-Doo watercraft with a rescue sled, a 26’ Whaler marine response vessel with a portable fire pump, and a beautifully restored 1927 American LaFrance pumper. Our department is the first in Pinellas County to provide advanced life support services. In addition to our own department staff and equipment, a county-wide automatic aid agreement provides Treasure Island with two engine companies, a ladder truck, and a District Chief from neighboring departments on all first-alarm structure fire responses. EMS calls are responded to by our on-duty personnel in an Advanced Life Support vehicle. Sunstar, the county's ambulance contractor, provides patient transportation to a medical facility if required. We are an Insurance Services Organization (ISO) Class 2 fire department.

The National Weather Service Tampa Bay is forecasting 6 to 8 inches of rainfall across Pinellas County over the next week, with Treasure Island expected to see the majority of the heaviest rain between Sunday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 21. Isolated flooding is possible during prolonged heavy downpours, particularly in low-lying areas and near the waterfront.

The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor the region for potential tropical development, but the chance of a Tropical Depression forming remains low (currently 20%).

⚠️ Drivers in Treasure Island are urged to use extra caution on flooded roadways and intersections. Avoid driving through standing water, as conditions can change quickly.

Residents are urged to help keep storm drains cleared.

Always remember, never forget. Treasure Island Fire Rescue (TIFR) will once again honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, with its annual Memorial Walk. Each year, TIFR reflects on the sacrifice of the 343 firefighters who died responding to the World Trade Center attacks, along with all victims of that tragic day. This year’s walk marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and is expected to be the department’s largest commemoration to date.

“What began with just five on-duty firefighters walking to honor the 343 brothers we lost on September 11, 2001, has grown into a city-wide tradition of remembrance,” Treasure Island Fire Rescue Lieutenant Steven Rowland said. “Our goal has always been simple: to ensure TIFR members never forget the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of those heroes. We walk to honor. We walk to remember.”

The Memorial Walk covers 3.43 miles, symbolizing the 343 fallen firefighters. Participants will begin at the Freedom Boat Club, 12765 Kingfish Drive, and finish at the Heron Parking Lot on Sunset Beach, 7545 Bayshore Drive. The walk starts at 8:46 a.m., the moment the North Tower was struck. Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate and show support on the 9/11 anniversary. The route runs along Gulf Boulevard, with refreshments and snacks available to participants along the way.

Free parking will be available at all Sunset Beach lots and at City Hall. A shuttle will run throughout the morning, providing transportation to the starting point before the event and back to parking areas after the walk.

Following the walk, participants are invited to gather for a Post Memorial Walk Event at Treasure Island Caddy’s, 9000 West Gulf Boulevard. Members of TIFR, city staff, partner organizations, and participants can come together for a meal, a drink, or simply to continue honoring those lost on September 11, 2001.

Congratulations to Firefighter Nick Costa on completing his probationary period with Treasure Island Fire Rescue!

Firefighter Costa has successfully completed all requirements to transition to regular status. He mastered mandatory fire suppression protocols, completed all emergency medical service training, and met every criterion for his new role. During his final probationary test-out, he demonstrated exceptional tactical skills, showed high proficiency in real-world emergency scenarios, and remained fully aligned with TIFR’s core safety values.

TIFR is proud to welcome him as a dedicated professional and asset to the Treasure Island community.

Last night, a formal pinning ceremony was held at the commission meeting to celebrate this milestone, a cherished tradition in the fire service. His mother, father, family, and fellow firefighters were all in attendance to support him, and his father had the honor of pinning the badge on his son.

Fire Rescue PSA: Leave your personal fireworks at home, friends. Due to the serious drought, the burn ban, and enforcement of three city ordinances, personal fireworks are not allowed on the beach.

Don’t make us spend the holiday looking for your missing finger or hosing down a small fire. Let the professionals paint the sky with a safe, spectacular show. It’ll be worth the wait.

This month, Treasure Island Fire Rescue crews stayed sharp by participating in intensive Hazardous Materials Awareness and Response training. The class focused heavily on the critical role of "first-in" fire units. These initial crews are tasked with recognizing potential chemical or gas hazards the moment they arrive on scene, well before specialized teams deploy.

TIFR firefighters practiced identifying key warning signs across different environments:

✅ In Residential Structures: Spotting unusual chemical smells, improper storage of pool chemicals, DIY pesticide setups, and signs of illicit laboratories.
✅ In Commercial Structures: Scanning for mandatory NFPA 704 "fire diamond" placards, shipping manifests, unusual storage drums, or industrial piping.
✅ Universal Warning Signs: Evaluating immediate physical clues like unexplained v***r clouds, strange sounds (hissing valves), or multiple victims showing similar medical symptoms.

First responders also received detailed, hands-on instruction on the proper operation and calibration of gas monitors—a critical tool for detecting these invisible threats and keeping our community safe during gas leaks or chemical emergencies.

TIFR is proud to train alongside our regional partners in the Gulf Beaches Training Group, collaborating closely with crews from St Pete Beach, Pinellas Suncoast, Madeira Beach, South Pasadena, and Gulfport fire departments.

A huge thank you to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Captain and Pinellas County HazMat Commander Dustin McKay for leading this highly specialized class. When a hazardous situation arises on the beaches, seamless teamwork and sharp recognition skills across our departments make all the difference!

🔥 Fire Safety Alert: Keep Water and Chemicals Away from Lithium-Ion Batteries

Treasure Island Fire Rescue recently responded to a lithium-ion battery incident involving a battery-powered leaf blower. The device was stored beneath an industrial soap dispenser for washing machines. The dispenser malfunctioned, causing concentrated soapy water to drip directly onto the tool. This liquid exposure short-circuited the lithium-ion battery, triggering a chemical reaction that filled the utility room with smoke. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of our favorite tools, but they are highly vulnerable to liquids and chemical exposure. Even a minor leak from an overhead pipe, appliance, or soap dispenser can cause violent battery failure, release toxic gases, or start a fire.
