Another brush fire has ignited, this time in the southwestern region of Florida. Check out this map from the Florida Forest Service.

This incident serves as a pertinent reminder that the State of Florida is currently under a State of Emergency (Executive Order 26-33) due to persistent drought conditions, which have resulted in a Burn Ban in Pinellas County.

Prohibited activities include:
๐Ÿšซ The burning of yard waste such as leaves, branches, and brush (yard debris burning is perpetually forbidden within Pinellas County)
๐Ÿšซ The burning of household trash or construction debris
๐Ÿšซ The use of fireworks
๐Ÿšซ The use of small fire pits and any form of open burning

The State of Florida has declared a State of Emergency (Executive Order 26-33) due to ongoing drought conditions.

If you've been following the news, you might know about a wildfire that started in Hernando County, burning over 120 acres before it was contained.

Here in Pinellas County, we're just as dry. That means NO OPEN BURNING. Pinellas County Ordinance Sec. 58-206: Burning yard debris (leaves, branches, brush, etc.) has always been prohibited here. But right now? With everything so dry, even your harmless backyard fire pit could become a disaster waiting to happen.

โš ๏ธ Quick safety recap:
๐Ÿšซ Yard waste (leaves, branches, brush) - Permanent nope.
๐Ÿšซ Trash, construction debris, household junk - Big nope.
๐Ÿšซ Recreational fires (fire pits, bonfires, s'mores sessions) - Hold off for now.

Thank you!

Just in time for spring bike season!

Treasure Island Fire Rescue teamed up with Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition, Florida Department of Transportation, and the one and only Koda the Fluff for a super-fun bicycle safety day at Plato Academy St. Petersburg Charter School!

They visited kindergarten through 5th grade students and made the morning an exciting, hands-on learning experience. The best part? They handed out 145 brand-new bike helmets and taught over 250 kids essential safety tips for riding, like how to wear a helmet properly, follow traffic rules, and recognize dangers before they occur.

A state grant is helping to enhance the safety of Treasure Islandโ€™s first responders.

Today, March 19, Florida Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Blaise Ingoglia presented Treasure Island Fire Rescue with a $34,000 state grant during a ceremony that also recognized several fire departments across the Tampa Bay area receiving similar funding. Deputy Fire Chief Tom Brennan attended the event to accept the check.

The grant will be used to purchase new gear-washing equipment for TIFR firefighters. This specialized equipment plays a critical role in reducing long-term exposure to hazardous, cancer-causing contaminants, helping to better protect the health and safety of personnel.

The total cost of the equipment is $46,000. However, with the addition of the state grant and a $5,000 contribution from Preferred Governmental Insurance Trust, nearly the entire expense has been covered. As a result, the City of Treasure Island will contribute only $4,500 for equipment that will be installed in the new fire station and used daily to safeguard first responders.

While splashing around is a fantastic way to cool off and make lasting memories, it can also carry serious risks, especially for young children.

Drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional death among children aged 1-4 in Florida. According to the latest statistics, 112 children tragically drowned in Florida in 2025, setting a heartbreaking record high for our state. Of these, 73 were between the ages of 1 and 3.

To raise awareness and prevent tragedies like this, Treasure Island Fire Rescue, in partnership with Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition and Palm Harbor Fire Rescue, is hosting a Water Safety Day at Treasure Island Beach, 10400 Gulf Blvd., on Thursday, March 19, from noon to 2 p.m., during Pinellas Countyโ€™s Spring break.

Swing by the family-friendly tent at Gulf Front Park, 10400 Gulf Blvd., where you can get free life jackets (while supplies last) and helpful safety tips for keeping little ones safe around water.

The National Weather Service has placed our area under a High Rip Current Risk through Tuesday evening. Even the best swimmers need to exercise caution when in the water.
โš  If caught in a rip current:
โœ… Relax and float
โœ… Donโ€™t swim against the current
โœ… If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline
โœ… If unable to escape, face the shore and wave and yell for help.
