🌊 Did You Know? 🌊

Have you ever wondered where the funding for our river cleanout projects comes from?

Our river and stream debris removal efforts are funded through the State of North Carolina. These funds are typically allocated to local Soil & Water Conservation Districts to help improve water quality, reduce flooding risks, and keep our waterways flowing properly.

This year, however, we did not receive funding for river cleanout projects. Due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene, available state funds were directed to counties in western North Carolina that experienced significant storm damage. While we understand the need to support those areas, it does mean we are unable to complete cleanout work locally at this time.

We also want to share how our cleanout process works when funding is available. Our district follows a rotating system, working through different sections of our waterways over time. Think of it as a cycleβ€”we may clean Section 1, then move on to several other sections (sometimes 5–10 or more), before eventually returning to Section 1 again. This approach helps us cover as much area as possible in a fair and organized way.

We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we remain committed to maintaining and improving our local waterways as funding becomes available again.

If you have questions or concerns about a specific area, feel free to reach outβ€”we may be able to help depending on available funding. πŸ’§

🌱 Land Judging Field Day in Jones County!

The Jones County Soil and Water Conservation District was proud to host our Soil Scientist for this year’s Land Judging Field Day! πŸ§‘β€πŸ”¬πŸŒΎ

Students had the opportunity to get hands-on experience studying different soil profiles, and learning how to find slope. Opportunities like this help students connect classroom lessons to the land beneath their feet.

🌱 Jones County Soil & Water Conservation Update 🌱

We’ve been busy helping our local farmers and landowners!

This year, our district received $47,491 in cost-share funds, which we’ve invested in 4 cover crop contracts. Cover crops help protect and improve our soils, reduce erosion, and keep our land healthy for the future.

We also received $9,500 through AgWRAP, with $8,165 already used toward an irrigation well. This program supports efficient water use and helps our farmers manage water resources wisely.

πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ These programs are just a few ways we’re working together to conserve our soil and water while supporting our local agriculture.

✨ We’ve also already kicked off our annual education contests! Jones County students are busy creating posters, essays, and more around this year’s theme: β€œWe All Live in a Watershed.” We’re excited to see their creativity and conservation ideas in action.

πŸ’§ If you’re a farmer or landowner interested in learning how you can receive cost share funds for conservation practices, we invite you to stop by our office β€” we’d be happy to share more details.

Thank you to our community for continuing to support conservation efforts here in Jones County! πŸ’š
