April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and All In To End Child Abuse is the DoD theme for 2022. Keeping our children safe is a priority. This April, we will take the time to remind ourselves that our MilKids are priority one. As a military community, we are all in to end child abuse.

• In April, the Defense Department recognizes Child Abuse Prevention Month. This year, we are seeking to inform our community about the signs of child abuse and neglect and provide resources for them to take action.
• The entire military community has a role to play in recognizing the signs of child abuse and neglect and recognizing the stress in parents as a risk factor for committing abuse. Reporting can be anonymous and the family will get the help it needs.
• Military community members of all ages can do their part to prevent child abuse and neglect. If someone you know feels unsafe at home, you can take action to get them help.

Watch for information and events throughout April! Planting of Pinwheel Gardens, Blue Ribbon Trees, and Parent Tips and Resources.

Sharing information about a new local program for military families!
------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,

My name is Christie, and I am an intern at Contact of Burlington County. I wanted to reach out to let you know about a free, virtual program we are collaborating with Prevention Plus of Burlington County on called Military Family Nights.

This free opportunity is for families of people who currently serve in any branch of the military or who are retired. Families of loved ones who are currently deployed are also welcome.

This program brings families together by teaching strategies that promote good communication and supportive relationships. Caregivers will learn skills such as encouraging good behavior and setting appropriate limits with youth, while youth will learn skills such as managing stress and dealing with peer pressure.

In addition to learning these valuable skills, pizza will be sent to each family’s house at every session, and new graduating families will receive $150 in VISA gift cards.

I have attached a flyer with more information about the upcoming session which will start on February 8, 2022. I have also attached a document that shows the topics that are covered in each session.

Please share this information with anyone you know who you think could benefit from this program or who might know of a family who could benefit. I would be happy to meet in person or virtually to explain further.

Thank you so much, and I hope to hear back from you!

Sincerely,

Christie Flock

Today is your chance to get to know a member of our staff! Each month we’ll be doing an “Employee Spotlight” with fun facts about our valued members! This month we’re spotlighting Tola Ashianor!

Employee “spotlight” interview questions
1. What is your role in the Family Advocacy Program?
Family Advocacy Intervention Specialist (FAIS)

2. How long have you worked for the program and has all that time been here at JBMDL or other bases?
A little over two years. I’ve been a FAIS for almost two months. Prior to that, I was a treatment manager at the Lackland FAP office in JB San Antonio.

3. What did you do before you came here?
Before I started working with the FAP program, I was a social worker for a contracting company in Texas, Maxim Healthcare Services. I provided supportive counseling to immigrant mothers and children.

4. What is the best part about your job?
The best part of my job is leaving the building to go outdoors. As a FAIS, I interact with the base, its leadership, members and families. Most times, that work is done out of the office.

5. What is the most challenging thing about your job?
That would be figuring out the many facets, leadership and parts to JB MDL.

6. What do you do to practice self-care?
For self-care, I retreat. Either I watch TV, read, write, drive while listening to an audiobook, pray, take a walk, crotchet, dance with my children or simply travel.

7. If you were to write a book about yourself, what would the title be?
“The complex life of a simple girl”

8. Best vacation you’ve been on?
Zimbabwe! Oh what a beautiful country: It’s people, the balancing rocks, the air, the natural calmness despite the many political challenges, it’s just an amazing place. I was there with my family of origin at least ten years ago. While visiting family there, we visited a retreat for a few days and I shared a room with my youngest sister. We stayed in a very airy room with minimal furniture and African décor and it felt so freeing, so peaceful. Later, my siblings and I played monopoly, we took long walks, toured, ate roasted corn from the street and just had a great time together.

9. What would you do if you weren’t doing this?
That’s a difficult question because I believe social work is a calling for me and the beauty of social work is you can diversify your skills. I will say that I’d likely start my work day at about 0900, rather than 0730. I’d go to the gym daily. At work, I’d supervise social work students and LSWs, provide counseling, attend meetings and provide briefings and somehow, I would teach French…I would love that!

10. Do you have a favorite quote and what is it?
Yes I do. It’s actually a bible verse that talks about acknowledging and accepting your weaknesses or issues and connecting with God for strength, understanding that He always has a way out. It’s 2 Corin 12:9-10. It’s rather long. Here is the part that is ingrained in my mind: “My grace is sufficient for you. My loving kindess and My mercy are more than enough – always available – regardless of the situation; for my power is being perfected and is completed and shows itself most effectively in your weakness.”
