ACS CAN lead volunteer Dr. Andrea Blake-Garrett traveled to Hong Kong for business and brought the Lights of Hope (LOH) spirit and message with her. While visiting an educational lab overseas, she displayed decorated bags (first overseas display), and participated in our national LOH panel discussion here at home, then set up an additional display at the airport. Thank you, Dr. Garrett, for spreading our message of hope by remembering and honoring all those touched by cancer.

This week the Senate introduced the Multi-Cancer Early Detection Act, which would allow to cover multi-cancer screening tests, once approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and proven to have clinical benefit. The bill aims to improve future equitable access to new and innovative cancer screenings among Medicare beneficiaries in order to increase early detection of more cancers for more individuals.

Because the risk of cancer increases with age, Medicare beneficiaries make up the majority of individuals diagnosed with and are especially vulnerable to the disease. The Act creates a pathway to ensure timely Medicare coverage of new, innovative multi-cancer screening tests and expand access to early detection once clinical benefit is shown.

“Detecting cancer early can be the difference between life and death,” said American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network - ACS CAN President Lisa Lacasse. “While overall cancer mortality rates have been declining for more than two decades in the United States, racial, socioeconomic and geographic disparities persist and have a higher prevalence in underserved communities. A simple blood test may be more accessible to such residents, extending screening opportunities to rural areas across the nation and within communities of color by ensuring Medicare recipients can access new, innovative screening options, once FDA-approved and proven effective.”

We call on Congress to prioritize passage of this important legislation this year.

“The reintroduction of allows us a renewed opportunity to ease a cancer patients’ experience by expanding access to critical palliative care services and increasing public awareness which will lead to patients accessing this care.

ACS CAN has long advocated for improved quality of life for cancer patients and survivors. We urge the Senate to prioritize passage of this important legislation this year to save lives, reduce health care costs and simultaneously prioritize disease treatment with comprehensive support for the person diagnosed.” -ACS CAN President Lisa Lacasse
