Earlier this month, Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill to make sure every household receiving SNAP benefits is able to receive the benefit for the longest period of time allowable by federal guidelines before recertification is required. This means individuals and families will be certified for 12 months at a time, and seniors and people with disabilities will be certified for 24 months at a time.

Thank you to the Monmouth County Board of Catholic Charities which conducted a Back to School Supply Drive to benefit the children serviced by Linkages and the Family Growth Counseling Services Programs. We know the children we support will head back to school with the tools and confidence they need to start the year right!

Thank you to the many donors who give from the heart! In total, we collected 38 backpacks and an endless supply of school supplies, including binders, notebooks, folders, book sox, pens, pencils, crayons and on and on and on.

Special thanks to St. Leo’s Elementary School, who donated over 25 boxes of school supplies. Because of their generosity, there are enough supplies for all the children at Linkages and Family Growth. Also, a special thank you to our Helping Hands, Melida and her daughter Sophia, who sorted through all the donated supplies and organized them by category. In addition, they also collected some school supplies from St. John Vianney High School.

This week marks the one-year anniversary of the national crisis hotline 988. Our very own Chief Nurse Executive Lisa Merritt was featured in an NJ Spotlight News story about three-digit new three-digit su***de prevention.
You can see it here: https://www.njspotlightnews.org/video/more-people-are-calling-988-crisis-hotline/

According to a survey done by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, only about 17% of Americans are aware of the 988 hotline.

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of su***de or experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis, 988 provides 24/7 connection to confidential support. Just call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org

The 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline) provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across the United States. The Lifeline is comprised of a national network of over 200 local crisis centers, combining custom local care and resources with national standards and best practices.

Outreach to the state's five lifeline centers is anonymous. Surveys show 988 calls climbed 20% in New Jersey to just over 57,000.

Something incredible then happened, all three of the 50/50 winners donated ALL of their winnings back to Providence House. After the fun, the WOWs presented PHDVS with $1,530.00 (alongside the $250 from the raffle winners) and a huge pile of children's snacks from our wish-list! The PALS (Peace, A Learned Solution) program in Ocean County held their annual reunion on Wednesday, June 21st. Staff scrambled to create an indoor event due to the rain and wind and did an amazing job bringing our "carnival" inside!

Current families and former graduates attended the event, participating in carnival-themed games, crafts, face-painting, a photo booth and a relay race. Children collected prizes along the way, and families took a break to enjoy pizza and snacks, as well as brave the rain to head out to an ice cream truck! The event concluded with a drum circle, followed by an impromptu musical chairs game accompanied by our music therapist on trumpet.

A mom who has been living with her newborn at HomeFront's Family Campus shelter for 6 months, had no place to go until she found us. She had been working at Amazon, but her life spiraled out of control after she got addicted to the opioids she was prescribed following a car accident. Her friend told her to try HomeFront, and while living here she has been a part of the For My Baby And Me addiction treatment program. "The way you're treated at HomeFront makes a world of difference." she says. "I wasn't treated like an addict, like a statistic, like I wasn't going to make it. I was treated like a person, with compassion." Today, she has been clean for six months, her baby girl is doing really well, and Miss. Rosie from our staff is working with mom to find their next living situation. "Watching [my baby] spend 2 long months in the NICU when she was born changed me," she said. "I saw how fragile life is, to respect it. I also learned at HomeFront how to sit back and process my feelings, how to deal with my feelings without covering them up and without using. I'm going to hold this place dear in my heart forever." Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton Capital Health The Rescue Mission of Trenton Henry J. Austin Health Center
