Secretary Fisher today announced that applications are open for the 2022 Jersey Fresh Farm to School Recognition and Award program to find the top school in the state participating in Farm to School activities. The program recognizes schools that work with farmers and the community to ensure students have access to healthy Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables in their school cafeterias and teach about agriculture through growing school gardens. The deadline to complete and submit the application is July 31, 2022. Secretary Fisher joined District 1 Senator Michael Testa for a visit to Rabbit Hill Farms earlier this week. The farm, which is owned and operated by Hillary Barile, along with her father Abe Bakker, brother Blair Bakker and uncle Robert Reed, won the Craft Malsters Guild Malt Cup for 2022 as its Pilsen malt won Best in Show, the top honor for the 58 malsters that entered the contest. Rabbit Hill Farms, located in Cumberland County, built the first malt house in New Jersey in 2016, after it started growing barley for malt in 2012. Barile was also recognized as a 2021 National Outstanding Young Farmer winner last month. One part of National FFA Week is the annual New Jersey FFA Advocacy and Legislative Leadership Day. Nearly 200 FFA members and sponsors from around the state attended the event at Rutgers University last week, which included remarks from Acting New Jersey Commissioner of Education Angela Allen-McMillan, Assistant NJ Secretary of Agriculture Joe Atchison III, Assemblywoman Sadaf Jaffer from the 16th District, and Assemblywoman Michele Mastikoudis from the 21st District. Members also attended an expo that allowed them to visit with representatives of several agriculture-related organizations. Joe Atchison presented New Jersey FFA Association President Abigail Goodenough with an FFA Week Proclamation from Governor Murphy. The USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) reminds New Jersey cabbage, corn, forage seeding, fresh market sweet corn, grain sorghum, green pea, processing bean, processing sweet corn, processing tomato, soybean, and spring oat growers that the final date to apply for crop insurance coverage for the 2022 crop year is March 15. Growers also have until March 15 to apply for coverage under the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection policy and the new Micro Farm Program. Current policyholders who wish to make changes to their existing policies also have until March 15 to do so. Mike Beneduce Jr., a Hunterdon County vineyard and winery owner, has been chosen as New Jersey’s 2022 Outstanding Young Farmer by the New Jersey State Board of Agriculture. Beneduce and his wife, Corey, were also one of eight finalists for the 2022 National Outstanding Young Farmer Award and recently attended the National Outstanding Young Farmer Congress in Hilton Head, S.C. They were recognized at the New Jersey State Agricultural Convention Banquet last week. New Jersey’s 2021 Outstanding Young Farmer Hillary Barile, of Cumberland County, was selected as a national winner at the combined 2021 and 2022 National Outstanding Young Farmers Awards Congress held last week in Hilton Head, S.C. Barile, with the support of her husband Jeffrey, owns and operates Rabbit Hill Farms in Shiloh along with her father Abe Bakker, brother Blair Bakker, and her uncle Robert Reed. She was one of four national winners selected from a group of eight finalists for the 2021 award based on their progress in an agricultural career, extent of soil and water conservation practices and contributions to the well-being of the community, state, and nation. The 107th New Jersey State Agricultural Convention is taking place today and tomorrow at Harrah's Resort and Waterfront Conference Center in Atlantic City. The morning session featured remarks from Secretary Fisher, State Board of Agriculture President David DeFrange II, Assistant Secretary and Marketing and Development Division Director Joe Atchison III, and Department Policy Advisor Jeff Beach. It was announced recently that a 24-acre horse farm in Somerset County was preserved that included funding from the State Agriculture Development Committee and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. “The State Agriculture Development Committee and New Jersey Conservation Foundation have a shared interest in preserving farmland throughout New Jersey," NJDA Secretary Douglas Fisher said. "We are pleased to have provided the necessary funding to preserve the Palermo farm permanently. Earlier this month, Overdevest Nurseries, L.P. hosted the State Board of Agriculture meeting and owner Ed Overdevest, a former state board member, gave a tour of his operation located just outside of Bridgeton. Overdevest Nurseries is a family owned wholesale only operator that provides plant material for the Independent Garden Center channel. The nursery grows more than 2,000 varieties of trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, and patio plants providing a "one stop" source for green goods. Stillwater Township Elementary School in Sussex County was the Grand Champion of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture's Jets Play 60 Eat Right Move More contest for the 2021 school year. The program is a collaboration between the Jets, the Department, and the American Dairy Association North East. The school received a $20,000 grant to upgrade its cafeteria and physical education facilities and had five students and three staff attend the Jets game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Met Life Stadium. The Department and the New York Jets honored Stillwater Township Elementary School from Sussex County on Sunday at the Jets/Miami Dolphins game at MetLife Stadium for its nutrition and wellness achievements. The Department recently approved the sale of a rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus, serotype 2 (RHDV2) vaccine to help prevent rabbit hemorrhagic disease, which is highly contagious and often fatal for domestic and wild rabbits. While the virus has not yet been detected in New Jersey, it has been found in rabbits in several states, mainly in the Western States. Yearlings from New Jersey sire Walner (pictured) led individual sales at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale in Kentucky recently. Walner led all stallions in gross sales at just over $7.7 million and average sales at $160,792 with three or more sold. The Walner filly Exile set the high mark for opening night going for $800,000, topping the previous record of $725,000 for a filly. Walner, along with famed sire Muscle Hill, each stand at Southwind Farms LLC in Pennington in Mercer County.
