Later this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agriculture Statistics Service will conduct the 2023 Commercial Floriculture Survey (2022 production year) with approximately 2,700 producers throughout all 11 states in the Northeast. Growers will be asked to provide information on production area, sales of floriculture commodities, and the number of agricultural workers on their operations. Growers can complete the survey by mail, phone, or online at agcounts.usda.gov. If NASS does not receive a grower’s completed questionnaire by January 30, a representative may reach out to arrange an interview. Earlier this fall, Secretary Fisher visited The Seed Farm at Princeton University’s Stony Ford Research Station to learn more about its mission and its role in growing plants for seeds for Ukraine. One of the farm's partners is Nate Kleinman, who leads the Experimental Farm Network, and is committed to growing seeds for different areas of the world experiencing conflict. Earlier this year, Nate went to the USDA's national seed bank and got seeds from Ukraine as he was concerned how the war there would affect the country's agriculture. One of the plants grown at the The Seed Farm was the Ukrainian Sunflower. Also working with him on this project was Tomia MacQueen of Wildflower Farm NJ, and Nagisa Manabe of River Stoan Farm. Joining for the visit were Chief Vincent Mann and Michealine Picaro of the Ramapough Lenape Turtle Clan,, and Princeton Associate Research Scholar Tessa Lowinske Desmond. Secretary Fisher is encouraging New Jersey residents to help take part in eliminating spotted lanternfly egg masses. While the adult spotted lanternflies cannot survive the freezing temperatures, they do lay egg masses that survive the winter and then hatch in late April or early May. “The more of these egg masses that can be destroyed now and before spring, the less of these nuisance pests there will be next year,” Secretary Fisher said. The State Agriculture Development Committee (SADC) has posted three short videos giving a quick glimpse into the lives of New Jersey preserved farmland owners and operators. These videos begin a regular series the SADC will produce highlighting life operating an agriculture business on a preserved farm. Pete Johnson (Johnson's Locust Hall Farm, Burlington County), Marty Bullock (Bullock Farms, Monmouth County), Roger Kumpel (Greenfield Farm, Burlington County), Scott Ellis (Ellis Farms, Mercer County), and Rich Norz (Norz Hill Farms, Somerset County) share their thoughts about the Farmland Preservation Program and new and beginning farmers. Another video features Rebecca Case of Hunterdon County, who together with her family, preserved the family farm, realizing her mother's dream. The SADC administers New Jersey's Farmland Preservation Program, including Farm Preservation across the state, Right to Farm, Agricultural Mediation, and Agricultural Development grants to preserved farm owners and operators. To date, more than 2,800 farms covering approximately 247,000 acres have been preserved under the State Farmland Preservation Program. Watch the videos at https://bit.ly/3Ds99tU.
