It was announced recently that a 24-acre horse farm in Somerset County was preserved that included funding from the State Agriculture Development Committee and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. “The State Agriculture Development Committee and New Jersey Conservation Foundation have a shared interest in preserving farmland throughout New Jersey," NJDA Secretary Douglas Fisher said. "We are pleased to have provided the necessary funding to preserve the Palermo farm permanently. We congratulate NJCF and Bedminster Township for their continued commitment to farmland preservation.” Read more at

Earlier this month, Overdevest Nurseries, L.P. hosted the State Board of Agriculture meeting and owner Ed Overdevest, a former state board member, gave a tour of his operation located just outside of Bridgeton. Overdevest Nurseries is a family owned wholesale only operator that provides plant material for the Independent Garden Center channel. The nursery grows more than 2,000 varieties of trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, and patio plants providing a "one stop" source for green goods. Stillwater Township Elementary School in Sussex County was the Grand Champion of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture's Jets Play 60 Eat Right Move More contest for the 2021 school year. The program is a collaboration between the Jets, the Department, and the American Dairy Association North East. The school received a $20,000 grant to upgrade its cafeteria and physical education facilities and had five students and three staff attend the Jets game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Met Life Stadium. The Department and the New York Jets honored Stillwater Township Elementary School from Sussex County on Sunday at the Jets/Miami Dolphins game at MetLife Stadium for its nutrition and wellness achievements. The Department recently approved the sale of a rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus, serotype 2 (RHDV2) vaccine to help prevent rabbit hemorrhagic disease, which is highly contagious and often fatal for domestic and wild rabbits. While the virus has not yet been detected in New Jersey, it has been found in rabbits in several states, mainly in the Western States. Read more at

The USDA’s Risk Management Agency reminds beekeepers and pasture, rangeland, and forage producers that the final date to apply for crop insurance coverage under the Rainfall Index program for the 2022 crop year is Dec. 1, 2021. Yearlings from New Jersey sire Walner (pictured) led individual sales at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale in Kentucky recently. Walner led all stallions in gross sales at just over $7.7 million and average sales at $160,792 with three or more sold. The Walner filly Exile set the high mark for opening night going for $800,000, topping the previous record of $725,000 for a filly. Walner, along with famed sire Muscle Hill, each stand at Southwind Farms LLC in Pennington in Mercer County. Read more at
