At Tucker's Store we sold about as many different to***co products as we had customers. Loose to***co for "roll your own" or pipes, chewing to***co, s***f, ci**rs and ci******es'. All these many years later I can still remember many customers by the brand/type to***co they used. My Uncle Tom Baker was a Prince Albert (PA) man and if he bought "ready rolls" (manufactured ci******es) he smoked Camels.

-King Bee

Chewing To***co Loose

-Red Man

S***f (Generally popular with the women folk)

Catching Forty Winks. Picture taken sometimes in the early '50s by our mother. During the Korean War our father took a second job working a night shift at the Milan Army Ammunition Plant in Milan, TN. After WWII the plant scaled back operations, but during Korean conflict it geared up to full capacity to support the war effort. This was before the front porch was added to the building. Note the old style oil/kerosene tank w/pumps in the background and the cigar stub in dad's right hand.

Photo from Album of Evelyn Floyd Tucker: Based on my guess of our size/age in this photo I'm thinking this was taken in the winter of 1947/1948. Jan 16,1948 is listed as #4 in the All-Time Top Ten snowfalls in Memphis with 11.8 inches. Can't say for sure that this photo was taken during that snow event but it is likely. As I recall the story from Mother we relocated to Tennessee from Alabama in Nov '47 and lived with family for a few weeks until our Father took over the operation of the store (behind us). Initially we lived in one side of the building and the store inventory was housed in the other half of the building. We are facing east probably to catch the light of the morning sun.

Items from the inside of a real country store - "Tuckers Store” Photos from Lynn Tucker. Lynn recalled : Most metal signs slowly disappeared. - Mom gave some to “former salesmen” who came by and asked for them. I took the old cardboard signs down before the final auction. They were/are covered in fly specks and stains. Clock hung over back window; RC Cola hung closer to old meat box; Be Happy Go Lucky (LSMFT) hung near ci******es behind cash drawer; Grapette hung back behind the cereal shelve. Calendar hung near the miscellaneous shelves as you walked behind the meat box.

According to the US Census of 1940 this store was operated by Mr James William Canada. Mr Will and his wife Ms Dora, as we knew them as children, lived across the lane from us. In their later years Ms Dora (1874 - 1957) and Mr Will (1877 - 1970) lived with their daughter and son-in-law, Ruby May and Earmon Tatum. From the census I gather they started operating the store after 1935 as the information indicates they were living in a rural Gibson County environment in 1935 but at a different house. Daddy and Mother bought the store inventory from Mr Will in late 1947 or early 1948 and operated the store until 1976. The building and land was rented from Mr Skiles and later his heirs Louia J and Ruby (Skiles) Cavaness also listed on this census sheet as neighbors. Also the first line of this sheet lists our great Aunt Era Waldrop. She was living in the household of our grandmother Eva (Flanary) Tucker who is listed on the previous page.
