PEI Kids

PEI Kids PEI Kids is dedicated to promoting and maintaining a safe environment for all children. PEI Kids operates three types of programs.
(6)

PEI Kids works with the child, family, and caregiver(s) to provide Prevention, Education, Intervention services related to personal safety, sexual abuse, and the overall well-being of the child. They are Prevention, Intervention and Client Support Services. Prevention: These programs focus on teaching children and adults about issues surrounding the well-being of children. All workshops are intera

ctive and age appropriate. Intervention: These programs assist children with recovery from community violence, trauma and sexual abuse, and help avert crises and reduce the risk of revictimization. We also work with youth in the juvenile justice system to help them work toward positive pursuits, improved decision making, and more productive futures. Client Support Services: These programs support children in foster care and families under DCPP supervision by providing Supervised Visitation in a safe, nurturing environment and transportation to attend appointments, court-ordered activities and services associated with the child and family's well being.

At PEI Kids, we encourage early reading and child literacy. According to the World Population Review, New Jersey has the fifth-lowest literacy rate in the U.S. with 16.9% of adults lacking basic literacy skills. Let’s give our kids a literate future by teaching them important reading skills while they’re young. Check out New Jersey’s plans to increase child literacy below.

Today is National Family Literacy Day! Throughout the month, we’ll be talking about the importance of child literacy and ways to improve it. Children whose parents regularly read to them have much higher literacy rates than their peers, and they carry that knowledge into their adult lives. To celebrate this special day, read this article from Teachers First, which has some great ideas for fun activities you can plan with your kids.

September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, and we at PEI Kids are doing our part to spread the message.

Mercer County is among the top three counties with the highest rates of su***de and self-inflicted injury statewide. PEI Kids is dedicated to changing that statistic with our Teen Mental Health First Aid program (tMHFA). Using the tMHFA action plan, we encourage students to look for warning signs of mental health crisis in their friends, ask direct mental health questions, listen to their friend’s emotional status, and help them connect with other support services. Our prevention educators also accept youth disclosures of suicidal ideation and direct students to support services during and after the program.

Teenagers can be vulnerable to many mental health difficulties. This month, PEI KIDS observes National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month to help every student find the mental health support they need.

Through the Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) program, we teach teens how to navigate mental health crises, including how to recognize a friend in crisis, provide support, and ask for additional help from trusted adults. Learn more about our tMHFA program at: peikids.org/new-in-2022/

Let's break the stigma. There can often be stigma in communities of color against seeking mental health therapy. If you or someone you know have considered getting therapy, but have been hesitant, join this zoom session tomorrow at 3PM to hear from a panel of therapists who can answer your questions, offer guidance, and give insight into what therapy involves and what you should expect at your first session.
