There will be an exhibit at the Dade County Public Library on Thursday, May 21, from 5:00 to 7:00 featuring the art of Madison Hawkins, 23, and her great-grandmother Verenice Hawkins, 93. Madison is a recent graduate of Kennesaw State University, where she majored in art with a concentration in illustration. For her senior show there, she chose to do paintings of her great-grandmother’s handiwork, her quilts and afghans.
When asked why she decided to pay tribute to her great-grandmother’s work, Madison said, “My great-grandmother has always been an inspiration to me. Not only is she an amazing human being, a pillar in her community, and a loving member of my family, but she is the first and possibly the greatest artist I have ever known. When we were asked to create a portfolio about something we care about, I knew I wanted to honor her and her work. Her quilts are her pride and joy, and I wanted to show my love and appreciation of them. She has supported me through my college career and I cannot thank her enough.”
Madison has shown her work in two art exhibits in Kennesaw recently, but this show will be more accessible to her friends and family at home. She describes her work like this: “While I do make traditional works, these paintings were all done digitally. First, I take a good reference photo of what I want to paint. Then, using my tablet, I am able to digitally sketch and paint using the software on my computer. My tablet acts as a canvas so I can still hand paint my art. No AI is ever used during my process, as I am staunchly against it. My process is just lots different brushes and time.”
Madison is a graduate of Dade County High School and is the daughter of Ben and Belinda Hawkins of Rising Fawn and the granddaughter of Ronnie and Melody Hawkins, also of Rising Fawn.
Madison’s great-grandmother, Verenice Hawkins, known to her as Nanny, has been making quilts and afghans for many years. She has made quilts and afghans for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is well-known in her community, having served as Dade County’s public health nurse, a substitute teacher and a volunteer at Dade Elementary School. Verenice Hawkins’s works will be displayed alongside Madison’s paintings of them.
Continuing the theme of family, some of Madison’s paintings also feature her young cousins Jack, Quinn, and Kaia Tatum.
To open the exhibit, there will be a reception on Thursday, May 21, from 5:00 to 7:00 at the library with light refreshments. Come and visit with the two artists. If you can’t make it Thursday evening, the exhibit will be up at the library through Saturday, May 23.
