On December 1st, we commemorate World AIDS Day 2023, under the theme Let Communities Lead. In the 35 years since the first World AIDS Day in 1988, the world has mourned an army of friends, family members, teachers, healers and colleagues lost to the virus. Some of the more well-known individuals who contracted and lost their battles to HIV-related infections include Alvin Ailey, Isaac Asimov, Arthur Ashe, Ryan White, Freddie Mercury.

Communities living with, and affected by, HIV, networks of people from key populations and youth leaders have been, and continue to be, essential for progress in the HIV response. The world can end AIDS with communities leading the way.

This , support arts education in Trenton!
For 35 years, the Trenton Education Dance Institute (TEDI) has helped students discover their hidden strengths and build self-confidence.
TEDI has been around so long that some of our first alums are now TEDI grandparents!
Carolyn’s two sets of twins illuminate some recent examples of TEDI’s impact – it’s about so much more than dance instruction. Many students look forward to their TEDI class to help them cope with challenges, as an opportunity to make new friends and for the rare opportunity to master forms of artistic self-expression. Decades of research document the powerful impact that arts education has on young people. And that's why students in Trenton’s public schools have embraced TEDI for generations and with your help, we hope to expand to even more city schools this year!
Please consider supporting TEDI. All contributions make a positive difference, no matter the size.
Your support helps TEDI students keep on dancing!!

A huge, heartfelt thanks to the Auxiliary Board of CHSofNJ for bringing the magic of Christmas to over 160 families today! These dedicated volunteers have been coordinating Santa's Wonderland since 1964, including during the pandemic lockdown when the event pivoted to Zoom!
Children ages 1 through 91 enjoyed games, tricky trays, crafts, delicious home-baked treats, a sing-a-long and of course, the opportunity to meet Santa. Before heading out, two young sisters stopped by the registration table because they still had a few dollars left over so they asked if they could make a donation to help other children. That is what the season is all about!

The families, staff, volunteers and Board of CHSofNJ are thankful for you!! Today, Kara delivered presents for two of our families and we noticed there were extra items. She explained that since she only 'had' to buy a car seat and a highchair, she wanted to also buy each family walkers! Your generosity is the greatest of gifts. And our Early Head Start supervisor Donna is holding a little boy who also wanted to express his gratitude...cheezin!!

Elijah's story
"My adoptive mom has always told me to never be ashamed of my story. From the time I can remember I was always told that I was adopted, that I was born HIV antibody positive, and that I was never, ever to consider myself or my story a dirty little secret. Growing up HIV antibody positive and being adopted into a family of siblings (3 adopted brothers) who also almost have the same story as mine, has seriously impacted and influenced my personal opinions, my outlook on life, my belief systems, and my career choices.
The first four months of my life were spent at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. My biological mother suffered from drug addiction and HIV/AIDs, and therefore the city of New York assumed custody of me. I was placed in the foster care system when my foster mother (who eventually became my adoptive mother) assumed responsibility for my care through the Leake Watts Social Services Agency. Since then, I have remained in that one loving home, which is the ideal outcome of my early beginnings.
My adoptive mother is my role model, and I am truly grateful. Her spirituality has strengthened me in my growing up years and for the days ahead. My love for God has allowed me to develop my spiritual life which has added depth, hope, and immeasurable joy to my life. Growing up in a family that loves and values people who experience brokenness has inspired me to share that same concern and comfort personally and professionally.
Due to my personal experience with adoption, I have worked in the child welfare sector for 10 years as a social worker. I’ve enjoyed making connections with the children and families that I have encountered. I have enjoyed walking them through the adoption, permanent legal custody, or the reunification process. Even though I have changed sectors, I continue to find joy in sharing my story and helping and providing support to others."
Please consider sharing your adoption journey with us! [email protected]

This Veterans Day we thank all who bravely serve and owe our freedom and safety to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This federal holiday on November 11 originated with the end of World War I and marks the day Germany and the Allies signed a 1918 agreement to end war hostilities. At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – we will remember them. ❤️🇺🇲☮️

We are grateful for the individuals and organizations who have committed to helping bring warmth and cheer to our families this holiday season! However, there are still more than 300 children in our programs who face a holiday without enough food, a warm coat and a gift to open. Can you help brighten the holidays for a child this season? There are many ways to help, see link in bio. ❤️❄️☃️🌲🎅

We couldn't think of a better adoption journey to share on the first day of National Adoption Month than that of Danny and Officer Kotora! To read more about a day that changed both of their lives, click the link in our bio or scan the QR code.
National Adoption Month acknowledges the efforts of those whose lives have been impacted by adoption and those who facilitate the process. During National Adoption Month, we celebrate the families who have grown through adoption but it's also a time to recognizes the hopes of the many children who are still waiting for their destined families. Consider supporting Adoption Services at CHSofNJ, this program is funded entirely by donations and sliding-scale fees. We can all make a difference, your support made Danny's happy outcome a reality!

Have a safe and happy Halloween! Sharing some tips from the NJEA before you go trick-or-treating with your little monsters 🎃
Make sure children can’t be tripped by loose costumes and that mask holes are large enough to see through. You’ve toiled for hours to make sure your child’s mummy costume is horrifying. But take a few extra moments to make sure they can walk—and see—easily.

Don’t let kids eat candy or fruit until a parent has inspected it. This isn’t just smart from a safety point of view—it also helps ensure parent access to the treats!

Stay on the sidewalk and away from traffic as much as possible. One of the greatest dangers on Halloween is the potential for a car accident. With children darting across streets and between houses, and harried parents trying to round children into the minivan to make the next stop, it’s too easy for an accident to occur. Remind your children to stay on the sidewalk or side of the road and look both ways before crossing streets.

Wear bright reflective colors so that cars can see you when it is dark. Your child may argue that Superman never wore bright orange reflectors on his back, but as long as your child can’t fly, then neither can that argument.

This week the Senate is anticipated to consider a three bill “minibus” package of full-year Agriculture (includes WIC), Veterans, and Transportation funding. WIC has experienced a 17% increase in child participation since 2020 and the program is expected to serve more than 6.6 million pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and young children in fiscal year 2024. Now, it’s up to the House and Senate to negotiate and pass the budget. It is crucial that the WIC community speak with a unified voice to urge full funding for the program—you can take action here to contact your Member of Congress.

10/13/2023

Effective late July 2023 the State of NJ WIC program instructed all Local WIC Agencies not to issue food benefits past September 30, 2023. Due to the national budget concerns food packages for all eligible women and children 1 year and older were not able to be issued to these participants.

As a result, the WIC Program has been inundated with unusual high volume of phone calls over the past two months which is expected to continue in to the foreseeable future.
Participants may use these alternate options to reach the WIC program:
•Emailing [email protected]
• Access the Participant Portal
https://www.nj.gov/health/fhs/wic/participants/
Participants who are not comfortable with the above options may choose to leave a voice message and a WIC staff will contact them within 24 to 48 hours.

The entire CHS of NJ Mercer WIC staff apologizes for any inconvenience that this may cause.
