Deputy State Comptroller Shannon Manigault joined the New Jersey OAG's Black Employee Resource Group for its Juneteenth Jubilee, an annual gathering honoring the history, resilience, and cultural contributions of the Black community, and a commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an important reminder of the responsibility to protect some of our state’s most vulnerable residents.

If you suspect that a nursing home resident is being neglected, mistreated, or is otherwise at risk, it’s important to speak up. Here’s how to report concerns:

📍 If you suspect abuse, neglect, or exploitation by staff or caregivers in a long‑term care facility, contact the Long-Term Care Ombudsman (LTCO): https://www.nj.gov/ooie/contact/contact-complaint.shtml

📍 If you suspect fraud, waste, or misuse of public funds involving a nursing home, contact the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC): https://www.nj.gov/comptroller/connect/complaint/

Emehelu and members of OSC staff met with NJ Elder Ombudsman Laurie Brewer and members of NJ Nursing Home Residents United nursing home residents to hear firsthand about the issues they are facing, and to discuss the importance of financial transparency in long‑term care.

OSC’s mission is to ensure public dollars are used responsibly. Clear, accurate financial reporting helps improve oversight, strengthen accountability, and give residents, families, employees, and taxpayers confidence in how resources are being used.

We appreciate the dedication of nursing home staff and understand how transparency can help support better working conditions, appropriate staffing, and improved care for residents.
