Author of many haunting tales!

Today in 1809, Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a poet and writer of mystery and suspense tales. His works include; The Fall of the House of Usher, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, The Murders in the Rue Morgue and his famous poem The Raven. We have reason to believe the Gilder's might have been fans of his works.

Nipper!
Perhaps the best known Fox Terrier in the world, he has been recognized as RCA Victor’s trademark since 1929. But, did you know he is immortalized in four stained glass windows atop a tower in Camden, New Jersey?

For the majority of the 20th century, RCA Victor (formerly Victor Talking Machine Company) was headquartered in Camden, directly across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. The Nipper Building – formerly Building 17, RCA Victor Company, Camden Plant – was originally used as a Victrola cabinet factory. The building was completed in 1916 by the architectural and engineering firm, Ballinger & Perrot.

So, how did Nipper get involved? Around the turn of the century, a relatively unknown British artist painted his brother’s dog, Nipper, listening attentively in front of a phonograph. The painting was titled, “His Master’s Voice.” It was purchased by the British Gramophone Company and became the trademark for them and their American affiliate, the Victor Talking Machine Company, in 1901.

Four round stained glass windows depicting the Nipper trademark were incorporated in the new Camden factory’s tower in 1915, and beautifully illuminated at night. They were made by D’Ascenzo Studios of Philadelphia.

RCA purchased the Victor Company, and the trademark, in 1929.

Today, the Nipper Building is the sole remaining structure of the old RCA complex, which was abandoned in the 1990s. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002; and in 2003, converted into luxury apartments and retail space. The successful, adaptive reuse development utilized Historic Preservation Investment Tax Credits.

History at its best!

“Man Walks on Moon!”

There was little need to wait for the morning’s headlines on July 20, 1969 as millions around the world were glued to their TV set at 10:30pm ET watching this remarkable, tension-filled achievement. It was 50 years ago, today!

Apollo 11 traveled three continuous days from Florida before reaching lunar orbit on July 19th. That equaled 240,000 miles. The three astronauts on board – New Jersey’s own Buzz Aldrin (the lunar module’s pilot), Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins – waited until the following afternoon to begin their decent to the moon’s surface. Eagle, the lunar module contained Aldrin & Armstrong; Collins remained in the command module.

Eagle touched down on the Sea of Tranquility at 4:18pm. Six hours later, they opened the hatch. Seventeen minutes later, Armstrong spoke the now famous words to the nation, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” and stepped off the ladder. Their exploration of the terrain lasted two hours. They took photographs, planted a US flag – made by Annin Flag Company in Verona, New Jersey! – and ran scientific tests. That night, Aldrin & Armstrong slept on the moon!

The next day, July 21st, Eagle began its ascent back to the command module, successfully docked (whew!), and began their journey back home. Apollo 11 safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24th.

There were five more lunar landing missions; the last in 1972. President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 goal had been realized. “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.”
