A County Commissioner is an elected, part-time legislator at the county level of government. The seven members of the Mercer County Board of County Commissioners are elected at-large to three-year staggered terms. State statutes determine the number of County Commissioners based on county classification and population. The Board has a Chair and Vice-Chair; these positions are rotated amongst board

members each year. Duties of a County Commissioner

The Board of County Commissioners acts as a formulator of policy and provides a check on the powers of the County Executive. The Board also approves all county contracts and gives advice and consent to the County Executive’s appointments of department heads, and appointments to boards and commissions. After receiving the proposed county budget from the County Executive in January of each year, it is the duty of the Freeholder Board to thoroughly review, make appropriate changes, and then vote on the budget. The Board of County Commissioners' powers include:

§ adopting the County's Administrative Code
§ passing ordinances and resolutions
§ reviewing, modifying, and adopting all operating and capital budgets
§ evaluating and studying the County's Annual Budget before final approval
§ making contracts with municipalities in the county

The Mercer County Commissioners oversee the provision of funds for all county departments to include:

§ Mercer County Geriatric Center
§ Mercer County Community College
§ Vocational-Technical School
§ Mercer County Board of Social Services
§ Mercer County's correctional facilities, County Sheriff and the County Court House
§ Mercer County Improvement Authority
§ Mercer County Park Commission
§ Mercer County Library Systems

On this Memorial Day, the Mercer County Board of County Commissioners extends our deepest gratitude to our fallen heroes, and to the families who carry their legacy forward. Our community and our country are forever indebted to their courage and dedication to protecting our freedoms.

Commissioners Lucy Walter and Nina Melker participated in the ribbon cutting for the Food Farmacy at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton Fitness and Wellness Center today. It marks the first in the area and partners the hospital with Mercer Street Friends to provide dietician services and healthy food options to those deemed food insecure by their healthcare providers.

ALERT: Mercer County offices will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 26, due to the ongoing winter storm. Mercer County Park Commission facilities, Mercer County Library System, and Mercer County Board of Social Services will also be closed tomorrow.

The County operates an emergency Code Blue shelter at The Rescue Mission of Trenton at 98 Carroll St., Trenton, that offers a warming center open 24 hours. A full list of warming centers around the county is available at tinyurl.com/MercerCountyWarming. Please note that Monday hours for some locations are undetermined, and may only be opened as needed on an emergency basis.

Please be safe and avoid travel except in emergency circumstances. Check on your family and neighbors, charge any electronic devices, and avoid leaving pets outside unattended. In case of an emergency, call 911.
