A County Commissioner is an elected, part-time legislator at the county level of government. The seven members of the Mercer County Board of County Commissioners are elected at-large to three-year staggered terms. State statutes determine the number of County Commissioners based on county classification and population. The Board has a Chair and Vice-Chair; these positions are rotated amongst board

members each year. Duties of a County Commissioner

The Board of County Commissioners acts as a formulator of policy and provides a check on the powers of the County Executive. The Board also approves all county contracts and gives advice and consent to the County Executive’s appointments of department heads, and appointments to boards and commissions. After receiving the proposed county budget from the County Executive in January of each year, it is the duty of the Freeholder Board to thoroughly review, make appropriate changes, and then vote on the budget. The Board of County Commissioners' powers include:

§ adopting the County's Administrative Code
§ passing ordinances and resolutions
§ reviewing, modifying, and adopting all operating and capital budgets
§ evaluating and studying the County's Annual Budget before final approval
§ making contracts with municipalities in the county

The Mercer County Commissioners oversee the provision of funds for all county departments to include:

§ Mercer County Geriatric Center
§ Mercer County Community College
§ Vocational-Technical School
§ Mercer County Board of Social Services
§ Mercer County's correctional facilities, County Sheriff and the County Court House
§ Mercer County Improvement Authority
§ Mercer County Park Commission
§ Mercer County Library Systems

🌟 Happy Juneteenth from the Mercer County Board of County Commissioners! 🌟

Today, we join our community and the nation in commemorating Juneteenth—a day of profound historical significance that marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received news of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is not only a time for celebration, but also a vital moment for reflection, education, and honoring the incredible resilience, culture, and enduring contributions of African Americans.

Here in Mercer County, we are proud of our rich diversity and history. Today, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and liberty for all of our residents. We encourage everyone to take time to reflect on this important chapter in our history and to celebrate the vibrant community events happening across the county today.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
