Secretary Fisher stopped by the Isles Chestnut Avenue Community Garden Plow on Tuesday morning. The day featured members of the Howell Living History Farm providing educational sessions and a plowing demonstration that featured Belgian horses Bill and Jesse to about 200 students from the area throughout the day. The Chestnut Community Garden has been growing a wide variety of plants and crops since 1981. Secretary Fisher joined officials from Isles Inc., and the Howell Living History Farm to mark the start of the planting season with the plowing of the Chestnut Avenue Community Garden in Trenton this week. Secretary Fisher took the plow behind Howell Living History Farm Belgian horses, Bill and Jesse, as they led the way in preparing the garden for planting. Read more at

A Jersey Fresh Farm to School tour for educators from around the state was held at Etsch Farms in Middlesex County on Tuesday. Caroline Etsch explained several methods she uses to help educate students about how crops grow and the general operation of a farm. There were about 30 educators in attendance for this session, with two more sessions scheduled, one at Etsch Farms, and another at Specca Farms Pick Your Own and Fernbrook Farms in Burlington County in April. Secretary Fisher today announced that applications are open for the 2022 Jersey Fresh Farm to School Recognition and Award program to find the top school in the state participating in Farm to School activities. The program recognizes schools that work with farmers and the community to ensure students have access to healthy Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables in their school cafeterias and teach about agriculture through growing school gardens. The deadline to complete and submit the application is July 31, 2022. Read More at

The 107th New Jersey State Agricultural Convention is taking place today and tomorrow at Harrah's Resort and Waterfront Conference Center in Atlantic City. The morning session featured remarks from Secretary Fisher, State Board of Agriculture President David DeFrange II, Assistant Secretary and Marketing and Development Division Director Joe Atchison III, and Department Policy Advisor Jeff Beach. The Department is also represented at the Expo with the Jersey Fresh Farm to School Team, and staff is there to answer questions about FSMA and the On-Farm Readiness Program. Secretary Fisher announced today that $10 million from American Rescue Plan State Fiscal Recovery Funds is being distributed to emergency feeding organizations throughout the state. The funds were provided to the Department through a Memorandum of Understanding with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and will be allocated through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).
