On this day April 9th 1865 the General Lee surrendered and the Confederacy effectively died.
According to the Confederate Vice President Alexander Stevens,..."its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth".

What caused the Civil War? Ask those who started it. They declared clearly in writing why the Confederate states were levying war against the United States in their "Declaration of proximate causes for succession" and "Articles of Succession" where their opposition to the abolition of slavery is the central cause according to their own words. Indeed they wanted everyone to know why they were taking such a drastic step and published it in the newspapers and broadsides for everyone to see. But when the factual history is easily distorted by the purveyors of the "Lost Cause" myth, because many Americans are too lazy to read a book or look up primary sources for themselves, a "white-washed" version of history is preferred over the uncomfortable facts. What a sad state of affairs when a candidate for President of the United States, felt compelled to dodge a simple factual question for fear of offending the sensibilities ill-informed right-wing white voters.
