Today at approximately 4:41 p.m., A-Shift personnel were dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of Silver Falls Drive.

A firefighter from the West Iredell Fire Department arrived on scene first via POV and advised incoming units of an active gas-fed fire on the exterior of the residence. Troutman Engine 2 was the first arriving engine company and deployed a handline to extinguish the fire. Engine 1 and Ladder 1 arrived shortly thereafter, with Engine 1 personnel conducting a primary assessment of the residence for fire extension while Ladder 1 secured the gas supply at the meter.

While responding to the incident, Engine 3 encountered a motor vehicle accident and stopped to provide assistance.

Following extinguishment of the fire, Mooresville Fire-Rescue HazMat personnel were requested to the scene to mitigate and control the active gas leak.

All responding units have since cleared the scene and have returned to service.

HAPPENING TODAY!!!

We are pleased to extend an open invitation to the community to join us in celebrating 100 years of dedicated service at Troutman Fire & Rescue.

The event will be held this Saturday, April 25th, at Troutman Station 1, located at 125 North Main Street from 1pm - 3pm. During the celebration, we will present a brief history of the department and its service to the community. Refreshments, including ham biscuits, will be provided.

We sincerely appreciate your continued support and the opportunity to serve this community. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you!

Since the state-issued ban on open burning was enacted March 28, a total of 554 wildfires has burned more than 2,200 acres across the state. With little rainfall or improvement expected over the next 7-10 days, the statewide burn ban and enforcement action will continue until further notice.

Of the 554 wildfires that have burned since the burn ban took effect, only four have been determined to be the result of lightning strikes. Preliminary data indicates that 152 of those 554 wildfires were determined to be human caused, with the remainder listed as unknown or undetermined, likely pending law enforcement investigation and action. Since the state’s burn ban took effect, 150 citations have been issued for illegal burning.

During a state-issued burn ban, the same N.C. Forest Service personnel providing initial and extended attack for wildfire response are providing the necessary enforcement action to support the ban on open burning. Reducing the number of new ignitions is critical for sustaining adequate resource availability for an extended period, making state-issued bans a necessary tool for keeping wildfires contained and as small as possible until fully extinguished.

The public is urged to abide by the burn ban and to use extreme caution with farm equipment, machines, mowers, vehicles on dry grass, smoking materials such as ci******es, anything that can throw a spark. In current high-risk conditions, these could be a possible fire source. While not classified as open burning and not affected by the state’s ban on open burning, they are still contributors to new fire starts across the state.

Yesterday, A shift Engine 2 had a hoot of a day after being called for an owl caught in a fence. A homeowner saw the animal in distress caught in her patio fence through her security camera.

When Engine 2 arrived the owl had already freed itself. It was unclear if the owl was injured or just disgruntled. After consulting with a professional wildlife rehabber, the E2 crew learned that it is a juvenile great horned owl. The owl who has not learned to fly yet just "hops around" and got himself in some trouble. He was safely relocated to the nearby wood line. He hopped away saying goodbye deeper and deeper into the woods where the crew learned his parents will find him at nightfall, feed him, continue teaching him to hunt and allow him to continue being semi independent until he learns to fly.

While we have received much-needed rainfall, we would like to remind the community that the burn ban is still in effect. Please continue to refrain from any burning activities to ensure public safety and prevent potential hazards.

Throughout the month of April you will see our firefighters out testing and flowing hydrants. Please use caution while they are out and about. You may also see a slight discoloration of your water if we’re flowing in your area. Just run your water for a few extra minutes, and the water should clear up. Thanks always for your support.
