🔥 NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | OCTOBER 4–10, 2026 🔥

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!” With phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes, scooters and other rechargeable devices throughout our homes, lithium-ion battery safety is an important part of protecting your family from fire.

🔋 Use your charging superpowers at home:

* Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
* Charge devices on a hard, flat surface—not on beds, couches, pillows or other soft surfaces that can trap heat.
* Unplug devices when they’re fully charged.
* When possible, charge larger batteries, such as those in e-bikes, scooters and power tools, outside and away from exits.
* Stop using a battery or device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells strange, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
* When buying rechargeable products, look for products listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as UL, ETL or CSA.

Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small space. If they’re damaged or charged improperly, they can overheat and potentially cause a fire. The way we charge our everyday devices really can make a difference.

And remember: safe charging is only one part of home fire safety. Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and that everyone in your family knows your home fire escape plan.
