Troy Fire Department History

The Troy Fire Department was organized in 1940 by a group of businessmen and concerned citizens in what was known as Big Beaver, a small "village" located at Big Beaver Road and Rochester Road. This group convinced the Township Board that a fire department was needed as well as a fire truck and other equipment (which were delivered in March, 1940). Prior to that, fire

protection was provided by the Clawson Fire Department. The Fire Department had 19 founding members and operated out of a Ford dealership and garage on Rochester Road south of Big Beaver. In the mid-1940's, as the population began to grow, a second fire fighting group was authorized at Square Lake and Livernois Roads at a settlement known as "Troy Corners." Over the last 60 years, the Troy Fire Department has grown to six fire stations, one training center, 180 volunteer members, and 10 career staff members, continuing its proud tradition of community service. In 1940, Troy's first fire apparatus was a 1940 American LaFrance pumper. Today, the fire department operates 9 class 'A' pumpers; 3 platform ladder trucks; 3 conventional ladder trucks; 1 heavy rescue truck; 2 mobile air tenders; one grass fire truck; one reserve pumper; one training pumper; 13 staff vehicles; and several specialized response vehicles. Troy Fire Department responded to a brush fire near the Oakland/Troy Airport yesterday afternoon. The fire was caused by secondary power lines that had fallen to the ground and ignited nearby vegetation.

Due to smoke in the area, operations at the airport were temporarily suspended as a precaution. Firefighters worked alongside DTE crews to extinguish the fire and secure the scene.

We appreciate the cooperation of Oakland/Troy Airport personnel, DTE, and everyone affected by the temporary closure while crews worked to ensure the area was safe.

Troy Fire Department was dispatched to a reported trash truck fire. Upon arrival, crews confirmed that the driver had dumped the load into the roadway to prevent the fire from spreading to the truck itself.

While extinguishing the fire, crews discovered a lithium battery pack within the debris. Incidents like this serve as an important reminder that lithium-ion batteries should never be thrown in the trash.

Items powered by lithium batteries including power tools, phones, laptops, scooters, and other rechargeable devices should always be properly recycled or disposed of at approved collection locations. Damaged or improperly discarded batteries can ignite and cause serious fires in garbage trucks, homes, and recycling facilities.

Help keep our community and sanitation workers safe by properly recycling lithium battery-powered devices.

Today, the Troy Fire Department stands alongside our brothers and sisters at the Troy Police Department and law enforcement agencies across the nation in recognizing Peace Officers Memorial Day.

From all of us at Troy Fire, we are grateful for the partnership we share with our law enforcement community and we will never forget those who gave everything in the performance of their duty.

In 1962, President John F Kennedy and Congress designated May 15th of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of those police officers who have lost their lives in the performance of their duty.

Today, we recognize all the men and women who wear the badge and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Troy Fire Department would like to thank The Somerset Collection for their continued partnership and support in allowing our firefighters to train at their facility.

As one of the largest shopping destinations in the region, Somerset Collection provides a unique opportunity for our crews to prepare for complex emergency situations that could occur in a large commercial structure. Through this partnership, firefighters were able to conduct valuable training not only inside the mall, but also throughout the parking garage areas.

Training in real-world environments helps our members stay prepared, improve coordination, and strengthen our ability to protect the community when seconds matter most. We truly appreciate The Somerset Collection’s commitment to public safety and their support of the Troy Fire Department.

This week, Troy Fire Department completed annual fire hose testing on all department hose — an important part of making sure our equipment is ready when it matters most.

Fire hose goes through extreme conditions: high pressure, heat, abrasion, and constant wear during emergency operations. Even if damage can’t be seen, weak spots can develop over time. Annual hose testing helps identify problems before they become failures on the fireground — keeping our firefighters safe and ensuring reliable water delivery when lives are on the line.

This week, more than 50,000 feet of hose was tested — that’s over 9 miles worth of hose!

A big thank you to US Fire Services for their partnership and professionalism in helping us complete this important annual testing.
