This week we have 18 youth attending a week-long overnight camp at Millstone 4-H Camp. Attending an overnight camp is often described as β€œthe best week of their year,” but the benefits go far deeper than just a few days of outdoor fun.
Rooted in the 4-H positive youth development framework, residential camp is designed to build critical life skills. Attending overnight camp increases self-reliance, independence, responsibility, builds social skills and teamwork skills, youth are challenged by choice to participate in hands-on workshops such as archery, riflery, climbing wall, Giant Swing, outdoor survival, etc.
We are so thankful for everyone who has helped provide this opportunity to our youth from Montgomery County. Because of donors in our community, the Montgomery Fund and state level scholarships, our youth are able to attend at a much reduced cost!
Thank you!!!!

What do cows and cookouts have in common? Our Moo to BBQ Summer Camp found out this week!

Campers spent the morning learning where their food comes from by touring NC A&T Dairy, the NC State Dairy, and the Piedmont Research Station (PRS) Dairy. Youth learned about dairy cattle management, milk production, animal care, and the technology used in modern agriculture. One of the most surprising lessons was discovering that milk never touches human hands before consumption. From the milking parlor to processing and packaging, strict sanitation and food safety measures help ensure a safe, high-quality product reaches consumers.

The camp focused on the farm-to-fork journey of food, helping youth understand the many steps required to get products from the farm to their plate. By seeing dairy operations firsthand and then preparing their own meals, campers gained a greater appreciation for farmers, agricultural workers, and the importance of a safe and reliable food system.

In the afternoon, campers put their cooking skills to the test by preparing hot dogs, hamburgers, cupcakes, and foil packet dinners on charcoal grills. Along the way, they learned important food safety practices, including proper handwashing, preventing cross-contamination, and cooking foods to safe internal temperatures. Campers also gained valuable fire safety knowledge, learned how to safely operate a charcoal grill, manage heat zones, and apply basic grilling techniques that will serve them well for years to come.

Moo to BBQ combined agriculture education, food science, and hands-on cooking to show youth exactly how food moves from the farm to the fork while building practical life skills they can use for years to come.

A special thank you to the farms and volunteers who made this hands-on learning experience possible!

Have you ever cooked Cupcakes on grill??

Last Friday, 10 of our NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, Montgomery County engaged on an educational field trip.

We visited Metrolina Greenhouses in the morning and participated in their consumer trial garden research study.

After a nice lunch, we learned about researcher activity at the NC State Plants for Human Health Institute. We even got to do some hands-on lab work: measuring sugar and soluble solid content in various fruits!

Thank you to our hosts and collaborators for having us!!!

Yesterday, Field Crops Agent Emi Bigford and Area Specialized Agent for Grain Crops, Jenny Carleo, harvested the wheat Fungicide On-Farm Test (OFT) located at the Sandhills Research Station.

This growing season was one for the record booksβ€”but not in a good way. Severe drought conditions created significant challenges throughout the season, resulting in lower-than-normal yields and reduced grain moisture. While the results were not what we had hoped for, that's the reality of agricultural research: sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn.

Although we cannot control the weather, this trial provided a valuable opportunity for local Extension agents to gain firsthand experience managing wheat under drought conditions in the Sandhills. The information gathered will help us better serve producers facing similar challenges in the future.

We are grateful to the staff at the Sandhills Research Station for their assistance and partnership throughout this project. Here's to next year, and hopefully a lot more rain. 🌾🌦️
