In May, we hosted our annual Young Athletes event in collaboration with Special Olympics New York! Participating students from Turnpike Elementary and Rensselaer Park Elementary spent the day participating in games/activities as their peers and families cheered them on. This was followed by the annual closing ceremony, where each Young Athlete was presented with a ribbon by Turnpike Principal Ms. Wysocki and Rensselaer Park Principal Ms. Nelson.

This event was the culmination of the Special Olympics Young Athletes program at Turnpike and Rensselaer Park this school year. Young Athletes is a sport and play program steeped in gross motor skills. The 8-week curriculum, which aligns with SHAPE America’s National Physical Education Standards, utilizes progressions, assessments, and individualized lesson plans to provide each student with a unique opportunity to excel within their inclusive physical education class. This culminating event is a celebration of hard work and dedication to the program by these students.

Thank you to Special Olympics NY for their ongoing partnership, to all our participating faculty/staff (special shout-out to TES Physical Education Teachers: Coach Perugino, Coach Kelso & Coach Daley!) and to the families of our Young Athletes for their support!
