The New York Water Science Center (NYWSC) provides research and data about water-related issues. The NYWSC provides high-quality, timely, and unbiased scientific data, reports, and other information that are widely accessible and understandable and that benefit science interests of all levels of government, Tribal Nations, academia, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector. The NY

WSC studies the effects of weather, climate, and man-made influences on groundwater levels, streamflow, and reservoir and lake levels as well as the ecological health of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, watersheds, estuaries, and fish and wildlife.

Streamgage Highlight: 01503000 on the Susquehanna River at Conklin, NY. Part of the Federal Priority Streamgage Network (https://water.usgs.gov/networks/fps/), this gage is one of over 12,000 sites on waterways all over the nation that collect data related to five key federal needs. And it's not only important but historic, since the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has operated a gage at this location continuously since 1912! A we proudly operate this gage in cooperation with our colleagues at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

Streamgage Highlight: 01297000 on the Long Island Sound in Rye, NY. While the vast majority of our gages collect data from inland waterbodies, we also operate a fair number that monitor tidewater. It's one of our newest gages and it measures ocean elevation in cooperation with NYC Emergency Management.

Streamgage of the Day: 01425805 on Oquaga Creek at McClure, NY. A relatively recent addition to the 's host of gages, this particular data collection device went up in 2019. Positioned a mere 4 miles upstream from where the Oquaga joins the west branch of the Delaware River, this gage is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)'s Next Generation Water Observing System ( , https://www.usgs.gov/mission-areas/water-resources/science/next-generation-water-observing-system-ngwos). As a component of this network that collects real-time data on water quantity and quality, this gage is of vital importance to the work we do.

Streamgage of the Day: 01512500 on the Chenango River near Chenango Forks, NY. Another of the many gages that make up the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)'s Federal Priority Streamgage (FPS) Network (https://water.usgs.gov/networks/fps/), this gage sits on the river that borders the western edge of the eponymous Chenango Valley State Park. While the first gage on this site was established in 1936, that one replaced a nearby gage that went up in 1912!

We at the carry out all sorts of scientific work with all manner of sophisticated devices. But sometimes we just gotta bust out the ! And last month, some of our folks had to do so not once, but twice:

On February 5th John Wernly, Scott Grover, and Kent Smith canoed out to 04237496 on the Seneca River (part of the Erie Canal) near Baldwinsville, NY to repair the gage’s Acoustic Doppler Velocity Meter (ADVM). They then used a to cut through the ice around the gage before replacing the cable connecting the sensor to the shore and completing the necessary repairs.

On February 21st Grover and Smith joined HydroTechs Jared Marion and Zack Heck to repair streamgage 04228500 on the Genesee River at Avon, NY to chainsaw their way through some ice to fix an ADVM yet again. They made the repairs to the damaged cable, took a discharge measurement, and got the gage back up and running.

The precise scientific work we do and data we gather is of vital import, but in order to do that work we sometimes need to rev up our power tools and get after it!

(We proudly operate streamgage 04237496 in cooperation with the NYS Canal Corporation and 04228500 with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District)

This week's video comes from the HIVIS camera attached to streamgage 01505810 on the Chenango River at Oxford, NY. Established in 2008, this gage collects data on a waterway that eventually joins the Susquehanna River which rolls through multiple states all the way to the Chesapeake Bay. We proudly operate it in cooperation with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and, while the traffic cones in the foreground may add a less-than-natural tone to this piece of nature footage, the view of this stretch of the icy Chenango in winter is still lovely.

Streamgage of the Day: 04221000 on the Genesee River at Wellsville, NY. Originally established in 1972 to replace a different, nearby gage that itself went up in 1955, this site has been updated and enhanced multiple times over the last 5+ decades. It collects data from the Genesee as it flows northwards towards Rochester and into Lake Ontario. We operate this Federal Priority Streamgage (https://water.usgs.gov/networks/fps/) in cooperation with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, US Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District.

Streamgage of the Day: 01302020 on the Bronx River in the Bronx Borough of New York City. Located just upstream from the historic Lillian and Amy Goldman Stone Mill within the famed New York Botanical Garden this gage sits among some of the most beautifully cultivated swaths of flora in all of the Empire State. With its HIVIS camera, solar panel, and various other bells and whistles this gage constantly collects data of all kinds from the Bronx River as it flows towards the East River

Streamgage of the Day: 01358000, Hudson River at Green Island, New York. Originally installed in 1946, the gage provides critical data for hydropower generation, navigation, and study of the tidal Hudson River. Until the year 2000, hydropower generated here was used by the Ford Motor Company in the production of automotive parts, the plant continues to provide low cost power to the Village of Green Island today. The operates this gage in cooperation with the Albany Engineering Corporation and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

Streamgage of the Day: 01359135 on Patroon Creek in Albany, New York. Nestled within our state's capital city, on a waterway that joins the mighty Hudson River less than a mile downstream from here, the gage you see here was installed in 2018. And we proudly operate in cooperation with the City of Albany Water Board that uses the data to monitoring flooding in the city.
