A journey that began nearly nine months ago with candidate interviews, nominations, and petitions, finally ends with City voters going to the polls and choosing their next Troy City Court Judge.

We are beyond grateful for the opportunity, and feel really good about tomorrow. But we are not done yet! This race is likely going to be close. And just like in the Primary, every vote counts. 🗳️ Your vote counts. 🗳️

Abortion is healthcare. New York State must continue protecting and supporting women who come to New York seeking abortion care. This is why it was crucial for NYS to pass the Reproductive Health Act in 2019, but we are seeing that precedent is being disregarded. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, thirteen states have trigger laws that will immediately ban abortion. Elections have consequences, and we will continue fighting to protect reproductive rights and calling on our electeds to do the same!

“We are thrilled by the news that Governor Hochul has appointed Congressman Antonio Delgado (D-Rhinebeck) to serve as Lieutenant Governor of the State of New York. We know that Congressman Delgado has the character, integrity, and track record of success to deliver for all New Yorkers.

“The Rensselaer County Young Democrats proudly endorsed Congressman Delgado when he ran in the 19th Congressional District and look forward to seeing the work he can do as Lieutenant Governor of New York State.”

In case you wondered what running a grassroots campaign looks like: it’s this. After ordering your union-made supplies, you donate your time to put hundreds or thousands of materials together, and then have the joy of sending them out to those you hope will share your vision and respond to your message by voting, volunteering, or contributing to the effort…and then doing that same thing with digital materials…and then going out to connect with people one on one…and then there’s owing your family a huge debt for the time away (which is exponentially greater when your spouse is eight months along in a pregnancy).

Anyone who thinks a campaign is ever easy should know that it isn’t. But it is SO very much worth it. I’ve learned sincere details about residents and communities that we are all guilty of driving or walking right past as we scurry through life—and learning those details make you a better person. They give perspective, motivate you to find a solution that works for more than one person or group, and excites you about what your community has to offer.

If you ever consider running for office (even if it’s against me) feel free to reach out and discuss what running for office really means, and why building a stronger community is worth that uphill climb.

RCYD bids a very sad farewell to our friend and mentor, Bob Doherty. He was a true bearer of the torch, working tirelessly and with fiery determination for the community he loved, for democracy, human dignity and progressive change. He was wise without being cynical, kind without being soft, a fighter who inspired those lucky enough to know him with his energy and passion. He will be deeply missed by us all....
