In honor of Black History Month I thought I would recognize this gentleman right here. James Leake is Troy NC Fire Departments first African American member in its 100 plus years of existence. James works full time with the Troy Public Works Department and usually chauffeurs our first out Engine. Being he and his family lives one block from the fire station he also is our nighttime driver as well. Always quick with the wit,James has been with us going on 15 years and we look forward to at least that many more. Thank you for your service James.

It’s tough losing a retired member but dang boys, this one is toughest if all . We lost Assistant Chief David Creger this morning after a 7 year battle with cancer. David was the definition of what a Volunteer Fireman should be and in this politically correct world I use the term man with the upmost respect. He was the man you could count on to get the job done at whatever the call was and unless he was sick or out of town, he was there no questions asked, He held a regular spot in the top 5 for answering calls and was usually in the top 2. This didn’t stop at the fire service level either. If you needed help with anything and called David then he would be there for you. David was a good officer, always lending you his ear for any help he could offer and making sure newer members learned the ropes. His stories at the back step of the engine will most definitely be missed. Our prayers go out to his wife Kim and his two boys Nathan and Ben. Until we meet again sir , we love you and miss you.

We lost one of our own this morning. Retired FF Richard Blake passed away this morning at his home. Richard put in about 25 years with us. One of the Johnny on the spot guys when he served. Lived close by, worked close by and oneyou could count on to get the truck to where you were needed. RIP Richard

Stumbled across these on the State Archives site. Troy’s 1951 Mack at Troy Elementary School in 1957. Not positive of the firemen on the truck but am pretty sure that is retired fireman Denny Brown at the front of the truck. He was the in house mechanic and also ran a garage located across from the Fire Station
