A statewide burning ban is now in effect due to dangerous wildfire conditions.

02/28/2025

The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a statewide Red Flag Fire Alert, effective immediately until further notice.

The alert is being issued to discourage people from burning outdoors when weather conditions present an elevated risk of wildfire. In addition to dry fuels resulting from the lack of significant rain, forecasts are calling for very low relative humidity values – below 30% – and gusty winds across much of the state through the weekend.

A Red Flag Fire Alert does not prohibit outdoor burning, provided that all other state and local regulations are followed, but the Forestry Commission uses the alert to strongly encourage citizens to voluntarily postpone any such burning until the alert is lifted. Land managers who are considering conducting prescribed fires should take extra care if they choose to burn under a Red Flag.

“The dangerous conditions we’re going to see over the next few days make a good portion of the state vulnerable to fires that can spread rapidly and be difficult to control,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “These kinds of spring weather patterns are what make this time of year the traditional peak of our wildfire season.”

SCFC firefighters responded to 183 wildfires in January alone, nearly double its five-year average for the first month of the year. The agency has already recorded more than 300 wildfires in February. Historically, wildfire occurrence in South Carolina is greater in March than in any other month.

While small, scattered areas of the state have received minimal rainfall this week, fuels are still very dry in critical areas. Low relative humidity and high wind speeds add greatly to the risk factors for wildfire ignition.

Although a Red Flag Fire Alert does not ban outdoor burning, it does trigger certain county or local ordinances that restrict outdoor fires, so residents should contact their local fire departments to check whether such restrictions apply in their areas. The alert will remain in effect until lifted by the Commission, whose fire managers will continuously monitor the situation.

At approximately 12:13 pm on February 6th, Troy Volunteer Fire Department was requested to respond mutual aid to McCormick County for a residential structure fire in the area of Chestnut Ridge Rd. Upon arrival of Engine 10, personnel found a mobile home fully involved, and threatening another nearby structure. Crews from Engine 122 (McCormick County Emergency Services), Town of McCormick, Sandy Branch, Plum Branch, and Parksville fire departments worked for the next few hours to extinguish the fire and prevented any further damage to nearby structures and property. No injuries were reported. McCormick County EMS & McCormick County Sheriff’s Department also responded. Great job to all agencies involved!

Christmas came a few days early when our department received this pickup truck as a donation from Colonial Pipeline Co. It will be housed at our main station in the Town of Troy for our firefighters to respond in to emergency calls and to travel to fire academy classes. In the weeks to come, we plan on installing emergency lights and decals. We are very grateful to Colonial Pipeline Co. for their generous donation of this truck!

STATE FORESTER’S BURNING BAN TO BE LIFTED FOR THREE SC COUNTIES AT 5 PM TODAY

The State Forester’s Burning Ban will be lifted for Edgefield, Laurens and McCormick counties, effective at 5 p.m. today. The Forestry Commission is lifting the ban after evaluating conditions in these counties and in consultation with county fire officials.

The ban will remain in place for Aiken, Greenville, Greenwood, Saluda and Spartanburg counties until further notice.

Citizens who plan to burn storm debris in the counties no longer affected by the ban must make notification to the Forestry Commission, take proper precautions and conduct safe outdoor burning, staying with the fire until it is completely out. Two types of public outdoor burning are permitted in South Carolina:

RESIDENTIAL YARD DEBRIS BURNING
State law requires citizens to notify the Forestry Commission before burning outdoors. In most cases, the law applies to burning leaves, limbs and branches that people clean up from their yards. The notification law does not apply within town or city limits. Find every county’s toll-free notification number on the SCFC home page or at https://www.scfc.gov/protection/fire-burning/how-to-notify/.

FORESTRY, WILDLIFE, AND AGRICULTURAL BURNING
State law requires that you notify the Forestry Commission before burning for forestry, wildlife management or agricultural purposes. This includes burning for wildfire hazard reduction, brush control, endangered species management, wildlife habitat improvement, plant disease control, crop residue removal and preparation of land for planting trees or agricultural crops. All burning for forestry, wildlife and agriculture must comply with SC Smoke Management Guidelines (https://www.scfc.gov/.../03/smoke-management-guidelines.pdf). To make notification, regardless of county, please call (800) 777-3473.

We are pleased to introduce a new addition to our fleet! This 2009 John Deere Gator HPX was purchased in January from the SC Forestry Commission through their Firefighter Property Program (FFP).

Since its purchase, this Gator has been repainted, had emergency & scene lights installed, and a winch mounted on the front. Most recently, a fire & EMS skid unit has been mounted in the bed. This skid unit contains a 50 gallon water tank, pump and 100’ hose reel to be used at larger forest fires. There is also a spot to place a backboard for patient removal from remote areas.

Also, through the Volunteer Strategic Assistance and Fire Equipment (V-SAFE) Grant that was awarded to us this year, we were able to purchase a tandem axle utility trailer for transporting our new Gator. Both pieces of equipment are now housed at Station 11 in Bradley. We are very excited to have this John Deere Gator now ready to serve our communities!

(And yes, it’s hard to believe but the last picture in this post is in fact the same Gator!)

Join us in congratulating Firefighters Hunter Cline, Brian Dixon, and Hunter Waller for their recent completion of the Recruit Firefighter 1 class, along with over 25 more students from Greenwood and surrounding counties!

Completing this course is no easy feat. They spent countless hours over the course of 4 months attending lectures, training sessions, practicing skills & studying on their own. Some of the many subjects and skills they learned include: fire behavior, fire extinguishers, donning structural firefighting gear and SCBA, ladders, fire hose, fire streams, search & rescue, interior fire attack and self-survival, as well as building construction, ropes & knots, forcible entry, ventilation, water supply, salvage & overhaul, and communications. At the end of the class, they were required to pass an IFSAC written exam and perform numerous skills in front of evaluators from the SC Fire Academy.

Also, Firefighters Cline, Dixon, and Waller passed the written exam and skills testing on the first attempt! We greatly appreciate how much hard work and dedication they have put into this achievement!

Also a huge thank you to Assistant Chief Toby White for being one of the fire instructors for this class!
