TONIGHT!!!

We're so excited to talk with City Council candidates about the future of rent affordability, access, and housing quality in Troy!

Tenants are organizing collectively for change, and have a critical role to play in the November City Council election (November 4th 2025)!

Topics at this forum include the state of affordability and quality of Troy rental housing and potential Troy legislation and priorities for tenant rights, housing quality improvement, and housing justice. This will include discussion of Good Cause legislation.

The City Council majority doesn't want to hear from us-- in fact, they'd like to pretend they haven't been hearing from us for months.

But we know that Troy needs Good Cause, and we've seen the overwhelming support across the city for these basic renter protections.

There's a lot to do-- so join us in getting it done. Our next campaign meeting will be Saturday, June 28th at 2pm. Join us and show the City what we already know: the tenants, united, will never be defeated.

Good Cause Tenant Protections are foundational rights to lease renewal and caps on rent increases for lease abiding tenants. It is long past time that Troy joined the ranks of Albany, Rochester, Fishkill, Binghamton, Ithaca, and so many more by opting in on this critical state law!

Every Troy resident knows our city has a lead pipe crisis that at least two mayoral administrations (including this one) have dragged their feet on replacement.

But did you know the most common exposure source of lead poisoning is from old/decaying lead-based paint in apartments and homes?

Tenant Rights Protect Children's Health!

The Good Cause Troy coalition campaign has seen so much enthusiasm and support for "Good Cause" legislation from Troy residents, and we are excited that so many people have joined us. It is disheartening to learn the City Council Majority, which includes Tom Casey, Bill Keal, Irene Sorriento, and Ryan Brosnan, is already hitting up landlords for donations for November elections, promising to deny renters, a majority of Troy residents (65%), basic protections to safe and secure housing.

These rights include the right to not be retaliated against by your landlord for their own neglect of property and exposing your children to hazards.

Renters, families, supporters of "Good Cause" and public health policy: We need you to join us! Tenants and supporters continue to show up at City Council meetings, enduring embarrassing, long-winded attempts by the City Council Majority and Mayor to defend their incompetence and mismanagement of the city, with a simple, sincere demand:

Give Troy renters, 65% of this city's residents, common sense due process rights and protections.

And in return, the City Council Majority lie about what Good Cause legislation is and is not, and cynically have started hitting up landlords for re-election money on the promise they will keep renter's rights out of Troy.

Why Good Cause?

We envision a Troy where housing is more affordable, sanitary, and stable. A Troy where every tenant can feel confident their landlord will provide a structurally sound, fully functional rental unit, and if there are issues, tenants don't have to fear harassment or retaliation for speaking out.

Stable housing is the foundation of physical, financial, emotional, and social health. When people know they have long term housing access, and reasonable assurance they will continue to afford it, so many things in their lives become possible.

Last night, Good Cause Campaign supporters SHOWED UP at Troy City Council to demand they bring Good Cause Eviction Protections to the agenda!

For almost an hour, tenants and their supporters spoke about their experiences with unjustifiable rent increases, deplorable conditions of their rental unit, and harassment and retaliation from landlords who don't want to hold up THEIR end of the lease. We have a simple demand: Put Albany's version of Good Cause Eviction Protections on the agenda and PASS it in Troy! Renters are the MAJORITY in this town, and we are RISING!

Great news! Good Cause Troy just spoke at tonight's City Council meeting, over 1800 petition signatures in tow! This was our first official speaking engagement in front of City Council, one of many! Everyone has the right to safe, stable, affordable housing. Troy needs Good Cause Eviction Protections so that renters across the city know that they can't just be forced out of their homes at the end of their lease and that their rent will remain affordable.

Our next campaign meeting is February 24th at 6:30 PM at 386 1st Street in Troy, NY 12180. If you want to see Troy pass critical renter protections, learn some practical skills to organize your neighbors, and hear how you can join us at the next city council meeting - join us!
