Tahoe Ability Programās 1st Annual 5K Inclusion Fusion was a success on so many fronts! We created this event to build an accessible, community-supported wellness space that breaks down the stigmas and intimidation that can sometimes come with traditional sporting events.
Lets recap:
The event kicked off with both the 5k race and 1 mile fun run set along Truckeeās scenic Legacy Trail. Racers were met with cheering supporters, encouraging signs, and water stations with community members along the way.
We additionally had the pleasure of partnering with local law enforcement throughout the event. Officers from CHP and TPD didnāt just support from the sidelinesāthey walked arm-in-arm with many of our participants. Weāve had the pleasure of partnering with these officers year after year in friendly sporting competitions, and this event was another wonderful chapter in that relationship.
After the race, the event featured a lively culmination of activities. The day felt like a true festival of community support, complete with a b**r garden with locally donated kegs from Alibi Ale Works and Truckee Brewing Company, food truck, live music, and resource tables. We felt incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by regional partners who support adults with developmental disabilities every dayāfrom adaptive outdoor recreation with Achieve Tahoe to food support through Sierra Community House. The City of Reno provided adaptive equipment like GRIT Freedom Chairs for our 5K runners, and Friends of the Truckee Library shared their inspiring work toward a new adaptive library experience. We also loved having resources on hand from TEA and the Town of Truckee. Even the soundtrack of the day had a personal connection: one of the members of our live band, The Get Rich Quick, serves as TAPās monthly
volunteer music teacher!
This entire event was a testament to the power and positive impact created when we all come together. As a community integration program, we are so thankful to the Truckee/Tahoe community for creating genuine inclusion and advancement alongside us. Thank you to all who came out to support; we canāt wait for next year!
