Hawk Fire Power Outages – TDPUD Customer Update
8/23, 6:30pm: The switching work done today by TDPUD, Liberty Utilities, NV Energy and PG&E was successful, so we don't anticipate a wildfire-related power outage in Truckee this evening.
While there are no plans for a power outage tonight, it is still a good idea to always be prepared for wildfire-related outages at this time of year. Aside from the impacts of the Hawk Fire, we are in the heart of wildfire season, and wildfire-related power outages are often a possibility, whether it be preemptive power shutoffs when wildfire danger is high, or emergency de-energization when an active wildfire is near power infrastructure. 8/23, 3:45pm: Thank you to our Truckee community for being cooperative and understanding regarding last night’s wildfire-related, emergency de-energization power outage. Local utilities are still determining whether a similar outage will be needed this evening to support public safety, but in the meantime, TDPUD customers should prepare for the possibility of being without power for a few hours this evening.
Our region’s power providers — Truckee Donner PUD, Liberty Utilities, NV Energy and PG&E — are all working together on alternative solutions to avoid the need for a power outage this evening. This is the reason for the brief power outage at 3:30pm today. If these solutions succeed, we should be able to avoid de-energization in Truckee this evening.
Should we need to de-energize tonight, it would not be a full transmission outage like last night where the whole region goes dark. TDPUD, Liberty Utilities and NV Energy would work together to shed load to alleviate the strain on the transmission system, which is due to outages and damage caused by the Hawk Fire. Each agency would decide locally which areas of the system would be de-energized.
For TDPUD, our priority would be keeping power on for our critical infrastructure and the downtown area. We would decide which areas of the system would make sense to de-energize given the target that we are asked to reach. This outage would likely last for a few hours; we expect we will be able to return power to customers before midnight.

Apagones por el incendio ‘Hawk Fire’ – Actualización para los clientes de TDPUD
8/23, 6:30pm: Los trabajos de conmutación realizados hoy por TDPUD, Liberty Utilities, NV Energy y PG&E se llevaron a cabo con éxito, por lo que actualmente no es necesario realizar un corte de electricidad en Truckee esta noche.
Aunque no hay ningún apagón planeado para esta noche, sigue siendo una buena idea estar siempre preparados para apagones relacionados con incendios forestales en esta época del año. Además de los efectos del incendio ‘Hawk Fire’, nos encontramos en plena temporada de incendios forestales, y los cortes de electricidad relacionados suelen ser una posibilidad, ya sean cortes preventivos cuando el peligro de incendio es alto o desenergizaciones de emergencia cuando un incendio activo se acerca a la infraestructura eléctrica. Las agencias de servicios públicos locales aún están evaluando si será necesario un corte similar esta noche para garantizar la seguridad pública, pero mientras tanto, los clientes de TDPUD deben prepararse para la posibilidad de quedarse sin electricidad durante unas horas esta noche.
Las agencias de servicios de electricidad de nuestra región —Truckee Donner PUD, Liberty Utilities, NV Energy y PG&E— están trabajando juntas en soluciones alternativas para evitar que sea necesario un corte de luz esta noche. Esta es la razón del breve apagón ocurrido hoy a las 3:30 p. m. Si estas soluciones dan resultado, deberíamos poder evitar otro apagón en Truckee esta noche.
En caso de que fuéramos obligados a realizar un corte del servicio eléctrico esta noche, no se trataría de un corte total de la red de transmisión como el de anoche, en el que toda la región quedó a oscuras. TDPUD, Liberty Utilities y NV Energy trabajarían en conjunto para reducir la carga y aliviar la presión sobre el sistema de transmisión, la cual se debe a las interrupciones y los daños causados por el incendio ‘Hawk Fire’. Cada agencia decidiría a nivel local qué áreas del sistema quedarían sin electricidad.
Para TDPUD, nuestra prioridad sería mantener el servicio de electricidad en nuestra infraestructura crítica y el centro del pueblo. Decidiríamos en qué áreas del sistema sería conveniente cortar el servicio de electricidad, considerando el objetivo que se nos ha pedido alcanzar. Es probable que este apagón dure unas horas; esperamos poder restablecer el servicio a los clientes antes de la medianoche.
