Friends of the Truckee Library There is no governmental entity – including the State of California or Nevada County – that has an obligation to provide libraries for communities.

The Friends of the Truckee Library is an incorporated, non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to promoting our library.The Friends of the Truckee Library is an incorporated, non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to promoting our library. It has been the historical role for the Friends of the Truckee Library to advocate for and raise the funds to sustain our library and keep it open.

The Friends have been instrumental in securing 75% of the funding for library operations, through spearheading two sales tax campaigns that have resulted in 20 years of additional library funding. While Nevada County provides some staffing and operational support, they would not be able to provide the same level of service or additional enhancements without the ongoing support and advocacy of Friends of the Truckee Library. The Friends raise funds through used book sales and events to provide materials for children’s programming, community cultural events, adult literacy programs, and purchasing monthly best sellers which assures to assure that current literature is readily available to Truckee patrons.

Tahoe Ability Program has been an incredible supporter of the new Truckee Regional Library, including serving as a member of the New Library Advisory Task Force. Now, FOTL is excited to support them right back!

Join TAP for its first Inclusion Fusion 5K on Saturday, September 26 at Truckee Regional Park. This all-abilities 5K will follow the Legacy Trail and finish with a lawn party featuring live music, food and brews, and community tables. Proceeds support TAP’s mission to create inclusion, independence, and advancement for people with disabilities in our community.

FOTL will be there with a table, and we hope to see lots of familiar faces!

The new Truckee Regional Library has been formally endorsed by over 40 local nonprofits and agencies! See what Tahoe-Truckee COAD has to say about a new Truckee Library ⬇️

“Libraries are critical in disaster response and resiliency; they can be welcoming community spaces that can be used to address needs during incidents such as extreme heat, power outages, and winter storms. We need more infrastructure like back-up power, heat, HVAC systems, and community spaces in the Truckee community and we are excited to see the Friends of the Truckee Library working to meet this need. The COAD fully supports the construction and operation of new library in the Truckee community and are confident in the Friends of the Truckee to be able to execute this project.”

We’re so grateful to everyone who has stepped up in response to the Tahoe Truckee Airport District’s $2 million matching commitment for a new Truckee Regional Library.

Thanks to our donors, partners, and community champions, we’re making real progress toward unlocking the full match and bringing this long-awaited community resource to life.

The opportunity is still open: Friends of the Truckee Library must raise $2 million in additional private support by December 31, 2026 to receive the full Airport District commitment.

A new Truckee Regional Library will mean more space for kids and families, expanded STEM and workforce programs, places to study and gather, and stronger community resources when they’re needed most.

The Truckee Library is already an essential resource for local children and families, but the current space was not built to serve the community Truckee has become.

A recent Tahoe Truckee Unified School District survey found that 38% of students are considered underserved, reinforcing the need for accessible educational resources, technology, enrichment programs, and safe community spaces year-round.

A new Truckee Regional Library would create more room for youth programs, family resources, learning, and connection.

As plans for the new Truckee Regional Library move forward, the project partners recently joined JKAE and Group 4 for a value engineering workshop focused on improving efficiency and reducing construction and long-term operating costs.

Summer in Truckee means long days outside, time at Donner Lake, and plenty of opportunities to explore.

It also means many local students lose daily access to school libraries, classroom resources, and structured activities.

The Truckee Library helps fill that gap with summer reading, crafts, STEM activities, storytelling, technology, and free access to books and educational tools.

These programs help children keep learning, stay curious, and connect with their community all summer long.
