Building Stronger Families Before Crisis: How Prevention Can Change the Future for Sierra County's Children

By Little Things Matter Home Visiting Program

When most people think of child welfare, they think of intervention after a crisis has already occurred. But what if we could help families before they reach that point?

That is exactly what prevention programs are designed to do.

Recent national and state reports remind us that while New Mexico has made encouraging progress in improving child well-being, many rural communities, including Sierra County continue to face significant challenges. According to the 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book, New Mexico improved from 50th to 49th nationally in child well-being, thanks in part to investments in early childhood education, home visiting, childcare assistance, and family supports.

While this progress is worth celebrating, the report also highlights that poverty, educational outcomes, and family stability remain ongoing concerns across our state.

Here in Sierra County, many families face challenges that are common in rural communities. Higher-than-average child poverty rates, limited behavioral health resources, transportation barriers, shortages of affordable childcare, and fewer local services can create tremendous stress for parents. Research has consistently shown that while poverty alone does not cause child abuse or neglect, these stressors can increase family risk when support is unavailable.

The good news is that many of these risks are preventable.

Studies continue to show that voluntary home visiting programs help improve child health, strengthen parenting skills, increase school readiness, reduce family stress, and connect parents with community resources before challenges become overwhelming.

At Little Things Matter Home Visiting Program, we believe every family deserves support, not because something is wrong, but because parenting is one of life's most important and challenging jobs.

Our home visitors partner with expectant parents and families with young children to provide individualized support in a comfortable, non-judgmental environment. Families remain in control of their goals while receiving encouragement, education, and practical tools that promote healthy child development.

Our services include:

•Pregnancy and newborn education

•Child development and developmental screenings

•Parent-child bonding activities

•School readiness and early learning support

•Parenting education

•Connections to medical, behavioral health, and community resources

•Assistance navigating local services

•Ongoing encouragement through every stage of early childhood

Most importantly, our program is voluntary, confidential, and completely free for eligible families.

Little Things Matter is not an investigative agency, nor are we affiliated with Child Protective Services. Instead, we serve as a trusted community partner that helps families build protective factors that reduce the likelihood of future crises.

When families receive support early, they are often better equipped to manage stress, understand their child's development, access community resources, and create safe, stable, and nurturing environments for their children.

Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up safe, healthy, and loved.

Every parent deserves someone who will listen without judgment and help them navigate the challenges of raising children.

Together as neighbors, schools, healthcare providers, businesses, churches, and community organizations, we can build a stronger Sierra County where families have the support they need long before a crisis occurs.

Sometimes, it truly is the little things that make the biggest difference.
