New Mexico must count everyone to ensure we get our fair share of funding for essential services like healthcare, education, emergency services, and roadwork.

With the US Census deadline moved up to September 30, there are now FIFTY (50) days left to respond to the Census.

The stakes are too high to allow an inaccurate count! Federal funding determined by Census numbers will affect our schools, roads, and hospitals. As of this week, an estimated 46 percent of New Mexicans still have not responded to the Census.

You can respond to the Census online - more info on that is at sierraco.org/census. If you prefer to respond by phone, call 844-330-2020 for English or 844-468-2020 for Spanish between 9 a.m. MT and 4 p.m. MT. You can find a list of phone numbers for options to respond in other languages here: https://2020census.gov/en/ways-to-respond/responding-by-phone.html

Even in a normal Census year, getting an accurate count in New Mexico presents unique challenges because of our large number of people living in non-English speaking households, colonias, rural, and tribal communities. Those difficulties have only been exacerbated by the pandemic and other factors.

Please spread the word! We need everyone's help to ensure a better future for New Mexico.

The 2020 Census is happening now! You can now respond online, by phone, or by mail.

CENSUS STATUS:
The effort to count everyone in the United States is still chugging along slowly. After abruptly suspending field operations when the pandemic hit in March, the Census Bureau has been restarting activity in phases. As of last week, nearly all 248 field offices in the country were scheduled to have resumed operations.

A good chunk of the work is already done; at least 60 percent of U.S. households have completed a census form, which the government encouraged people to fill out digitally this year.

Census workers still need to track down and seek responses from those who didn't answer, and it's here where the coronavirus really starts to complicate things.

Normally workers knock on the doors of nonrespondents. But safety concerns have forced the bureau to delay those follow-ups until mid-August. The government has asked Congress to extend the deadline to complete the census results, which are used to distribute $1.5 trillion in federal funds.

In the meantime, most field offices are doing what work they can without close public contact. They're hiring new employees, updating address lists and leaving census packets on the front porches of homes without mail access.

The Census Bureau is also doing research on the pandemic. It's conducting an experimental weekly survey, which found last month that more than half of households with young children had lost income since the pandemic began.

For those who haven't completed the online yet: paper forms are being mailed now, and they should hit mailboxes soon.

Truly it's more important than ever to fill out the Census as soon as possible!

— An accurate count is essential to properly funding health care, education, and public programs including food assistance and support for people out of work in your community.
— An inaccurate census count could cut down the power of your vote and the number of congressional representatives from your state.

Filling out the census is a key way to be proactive about building and protecting your community in the wake of coronavirus.

Did you fill out your Census yet??

“The proper allocation of resources based on Census data is particularly important in our current national health emergency, when accurate numbers direct the allocation of lifesaving resources.”

One of our county commissioners has shared some very important information.

You may use the ID number that the Census sends to you in order to complete the census online (my2020census.gov).

But - if you do not receive an ID that's not a deterrent! You can complete the census anyway.

So if you get your mail to a Post Office Box, you do not need to wait for a human to deliver a card in person.
